Wireless Internet Co-Ops?

einstein asks: "How many other geeks out there are purchasing high speed commercial net connections to the remote areas they live, and then selling access to their neighbors to help cover costs? I know of a remote area with about 20-30 house all of which could access a wireless lan connection to share a 1.5 ADSL connection. I'm planning on bugging the neighbors to see if there interested soon, and I'd like to have some idea if this has worked for other people. So, who's doing this in a Co-Op fashion, and how is it working?" This probably won't be possible with most residential DSL providers, however would they let this fly on their commercial lines?"

I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror/Sci Fi writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.

I'm already nervous enough Carnivore, and the fact that my ISP could be snooping on me in some small way. My only comfort is that they probably don't care that much about what I do. Now if all my house passes through the house of some guy who lives a houses down the street... Then I still have to worry about government snooping upstream, and nosy-neighbor-snooping right at home!

Attention Slashdot subscribers: As you probably know VA Software, the company that runs Slashdot, is in financial trouble. Their stock price has been in the doldrums for months and they will soon be removed from the NASDAQ. We have it on good information that VA's board have now given up hope of saving the company and will declare it bankrupt in mid-August. At that point the company's remaining cash will either go to paying its debts or returned to shareholders, that includes YOUR subscription money.

Our recommendation: If you are thinking of taking out a subscription to slashdot, don't bother. If you already have a subscription then it may be possible to save some of your money, email CmdrTaco or one of the other site janitors and ask to cancel it. Do this as soon as possible.
