DJs Spinning Those Hard Drives

Mipmap writes "Ben Kirkendoll leaves the records at home in favor of his iPods, Apple Computer's disk-based music player, which he simply plugs into an audio system's mixer. He's part of a small but growing number of DJs who have turned to MP3 music files for their accessibility and convenience..."

I probably sound like a troll but does the world really need DJ's to stand up on a platform and spin records? Almost anyone can sit at home, find songs they didn't create themselves, and edit them togother into a mix of hours of dance music. All clubs *really* need is a cd player... but then again they have to have a DJ to be trendy and popular right?

    Rants - Dark Fantasies

December 10, 1997 - No, the date isn't a mistake. I was having a conversation with someone recently, and went looking for an old post I made on a newsgroup. I made a few (very minor) changes, and decided it would fit nicely as a rant.

I could be wrong about the original source, so I won't quote names. No, we don't all have dark sexual fantasies. I don't. I am not saying it because I don't want to admit to them. I simply don't have fantasies about being beaten, raped, humiliated, tortured, enslaved, abused, being fucked by animals, molesting children... the list goes on. And out of interest, the only D/s fantasies I have, involve me being the Top (and not an abusive, nasty one either). Sorry, you can't make a blanket statement like EVERYONE has ... etc. You don't speak for everyone. Preferably here - we speak for ourselves.

My personal thought is that sex is fun and exciting. The thrill of the seduction is far more interesting than someone simply forcing another person. And candy-coated child molestation and incest don't interest me either. Sadly, this does seem to be a minority view here. I came back to 10 days of postings for a.s.s.m. That was 281 stories. After deleting the ones I had no interest in reading either by codes (bravo for those who use them), title (canine rape was a give-a-way), or ones that seem to be reposted once a week. I was left with 81. Another 49 I had to open before I could delete - some had codes inside, others didn't. They covered topics like rape, incest, pedo, teen, etc. That left 32 stories - about 10% - and I haven't talked about the quality of the ones left.

The thing is, the entire exercise depresses and disturbs me. It has been pointed out to me before that there are a couple of reasons for the types of stories posted. First - if you want well-written consensual (both vanilla or BDSM) fiction you have a number of options. Mainly bookstores, since this type of work is widely available. However, if you want to find stories about 8 year olds, violent graphic rapes, tortures, physically (or mentally) induced slavery, etc. you don't have that many options. The newsgroup is the easiest way for you to procure this type of material, with almost complete anonymity. Don't fool yourself though, s.a.m. is correct - nothing is completely anonymous online. At the very least, someone at your ISP can track what you're doing. And those using company systems - I wouldn't be doing that! Most networks allow 'big brother' echos of other terminals.

Someone also pointed out that just because certain types of stories are posted, doesn't necessarily mean they have an audience. That someone could write 20 variations of the same theme, continuously post them, and even pretend they are being encouraged to write more. However, with the proliferation of the darker fantasies, I'm not sure this holds entirely true.

Do I think dark fantasies should remain unthought? Probably not. Do I think they should remain unwritten? Probably not. Do I think they should remain unposted? Hmmm... probably not, but I still have the right to be disturbed by them.

Now, onto more unstable ground. Do I think they make people do things? No, unless they are completely out of touch with reality. My only fear is that with some fantasies, especially those that involve harmful acts, it may give some 'validation' to them. Forming support-type groups that reinforce that your thoughts are okay may move that 'realism' somewhat. If there are a hundred (or a thousand) rape fantasies filling the newsgroups, some written by women, might it not encourage the thoughts that some women really wouldn't mind being raped? I'm not talking about someone with no thoughts to committing a rape in the first place. But do we send a message to some that the line is not static, that the old 'she really wanted it' line might be true?

I don't know, somewhere along the line it became out of fashion to write about adults engaging in consensual sex. That disturbs me, probably always will. It seems that the younger the participant, the more violent the abuse, the better. I do understand the point of testing boundaries in erotica, writing about things you might not do, but the boundaries seem extreme.

Now, I think this is probably because I tend to write about things I might do. I know I have written in the past about things that I hadn't done, that I have done since. Perhaps I cannot separate out the difference. I tend to see my fantasies as 'wish fulfilment' - things I'd love to do, and barring any consequences (AIDS, STDs, arrest). I write about things I'd like to do. So, when I read stories that turn my stomach I can't help but think - who would WANT to do that?

Ah well, it's something we will probably never solve, or agree on. I have come to the conclusion though that a.s.s.m. is just not for me. Hey, I'm probably too sensitive, and you know something, I really don't mind that. I just don't have the stomach to sort through it anymore. It leaves me in a quandary really, since I'm not sure I see the point about hanging around on a.s.s.d. either. I mainly started so I could catch Celeste's reviews to find an occasional good piece to read. I'll have to think about that one for a bit. Work seems to have been kind of busy lately so that might end up being the deciding factor anyway.

(I have since gone back now and then to assd, but rarely read stories from assm. Usually only clearly coded stories, or stories by authors I know and trust.)
