Changing Face of Linux?

standards writes "Reuters is reporting that pony-tailed Linux Users have been seen mingling with executives in short-sleeved golf shirts. The article suggests that real technology guys don't wear shorts, T-shirts or baseball caps." the article is mostly about the business focus of Linux these days, although I think the writer is a couple years late since I think this was really the case about 4 LinuxWorld's ago ;)

What pisses me off in the IT business is the infantile attitude many people seem to have regarding appearances.

It's like the way how you dress, how you wear your hair, whether you're morbidly overweight or even personal hygiene are viewed as secondary and shouldn't matter if you're just 3leet enough.

No, you don't need to wear a three-piece suit and $500 shoes. What you need to do is wear something else than jeans and a t-short, shower at least once a day, wear some cologne/perfume, have your hair cut once a month and lose that goddamn beer belly.

People who work with you and who do business with you will thank you for this.

It's my skills, not my appearance that they are paying for. As a Unix sysadmin, I won't be in front of clients or shmoozing with bigwigs. I will be in the back room making sure your goddamn servers don't go down and make all the other prissy fluff that you think oh-so-important completely useless.

Seeing as I will be in the backroom, perhaps you could see the idiocy of requiring me to wear whatever clownsuit you want me to wear, demanding that I shower at least once day, wear cologne, and have my hair cut. None of these things help me do my job, none of them.

Let me do my job of making sure that your ass looks good in front of the clients by keeping the company's systems running. Don't badger me to brush my teeth or comb my hair or bathe. If you need to contact me, you know my email address.

Cut the ponytails, shave your unkempt beards, and take some showers, YOU FUCKING FREAKS!

Maybe THEN Linux will get some respect.
