Apple and IBM Working Together on 64-bit CPUs
Currawong writes "eWeek reports that IBM Microelectronics is working with Apple on a 64-bit PowerPC processor called the
GigaProcessor Ultralite (GPUL). Unlike previous reports, eWeek now reports that Apple is testing the chip for use with future hardware. IBM apparently also plans to use the processor in linux-based servers. It's believed IBM will disclose some details of the processor in October at the upcoming Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, California. While this story is similar to recent stories about Apple using Power4-based IBM chips in future Macs, the GPUL, unlike the Power4, is smaller, runs cooler and consumes far less power, making it suitable for desktop machines and small servers. The processor is described as having the same 8-way superscalar design fully supporting Symmetric MultiProcessing." We had a previous story about these new chips.
This might be the ultimate operating system. It could be the thing that finally dethrones Micro$soft Losedows!
And I thought my Titanium rocked now. If IBM can picck up the slack that Motorola has created maybe everyone in the wintel world would wake up and see the power of OSX and with the 64bit chip ..... Wow!!! IBM and Apple used to make a great team and I hope Motorola goes bankrupt for the way they have dicked around in upgrading the G4 processor. IBM you rock!
Yeah. Another Processor. Cool. Even more Mhz and stuff. Ye-haw. Now I can run poorly written, crappy software even faster. WHO CARES! I swear this non-sense about the "bigger and faster" mentality is pissing me and I am sure many Americans off. Bigger, Faster, WHAT ABOUT BETTER! Technology is racing alone fast but the quality of the content is tanking. Why is it that the amount of innovation in thought is a dying art. All I get is lemmings saying, "We can improve this, we can improve that." What about, "Fuck the old way, this NEW way is BETTER." Honestly what changed say from photoshop 4 to photoshop 7? What changed from Quake to Quake 3? The amount of advancement has just tanked to levels I dare not dwell on. Another case in point:
S ISITORS-AND-COOL-MICROCODE...
Wolfenstein -> Woldfenstien 3D (Factor 10)
Wolfenstein -> Doom (Factor 8)
Doom -> Quake (Factor 6)
Quake -> Quake 2 (Factor 3)
Quake 2 -> Quake 3 (Factor 2)
Quake 3 -> Doom 3 (???)
It's turning into the nightmare "Been There, Done That." Where is a new FPS with original goal that doesn't use the Ray Tracing BSP method. There IS a better way, someone just has to invent it.
I cry out to a game developer to do something NEW. God allmighty battlefield 1942 has a CTF! I don't remember a lot of CTF in WWII but hey they need it in there I guess, god bless marketing. They didn't event try to obfuscate is by saying, "Capture the Urianium canister and get it back to your base." Nope it's an outright CTF... sob..
All the new FPS seem to have the Counter-Strike equiv. of a DE_xxxxxx map scenario.
An now after all this mediocrity I am supposed to "Ohh and Ahh" YET-ANOTHER-SILICON-PROCESSOR-WITH-EVEN-MORE-TRAN
Please like we care anymore IBM, give me an optical processor or a quantum processor and I'll shit a brick but don't bore me with anymore talk of new and bigger Mhz crap, M$ will just put out an even more bloated OS that will drive me straight back to square 1.
ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......
p.s.
After playing Battle Field 1942 for 3 hours I can say that it will outdo counterstrike IFF (That isn't a typo btw) they get a good map making community behind them.
IFF = If and only If

Anyone know if "they" are working on 128bit, and higher?
www.oobersworld.com - For those that ride.
Since when does Apple have any hardware engineers? Even their boards are outsourced, let alone the actual chips. More likely, IBM is working on this chip and Apple has received some prototypes to start working on their next OS.
If Apple had any ability to develop their own CPUs they wouldn't still be stuck with the pre-historic G4, they would simply ditch IBM and use their own chips.
Anyway, if this is anything like the Itanic or the Hammer, I doubt we'll see any G5s before 2004.
.
I live in a giant bucket.
Steve Jobs announced that everyone wishing for cheaper Apple systems not built around grossly overpriced CPUs and related hardware can "...just go to hell...."
I am a homosexual. I bought an Apple computer because of its well earned reputation for being "the" gay computer. Since I have become an Apple owner, I have been exposed to a whole new world of gay friends. It is really a pleasure to meet and compute with other homos such as myself. I plan on using my new Apple computer as a way to entice and recruit young schoolboys into the homosexual lifestyle; it would be so helpful if you could produce more software which would appeal to young boys. Thanks in advance.

Using that logic, we'd all be running on Alpha's.
What's my Karma Mr. Burns? "Excellent"
