Patents Choking Off Medical Research

pq writes "The New Republic has an insightful article talking about the "absence of truly innovative drugs in current drug company pipelines. And the explanation for that might well come from the supposed fount of American innovation: our patent system." Apparently they are trapped in a situation where "it's much easier to argue that `patents support innovation' than to try to explain that some patents are good for innovation while others are bad." A long read, but unlike the latest copy-protected mp3 player, this is definitely stuff that matters!"

Well said man. I'm tired of the slashdot crowd bitching on it's public forums about how much slashdot sucks.

Are you on crack? The submissions readers write nearly _always_ editorialize about the story they are linking to. It's both funny and depressing how much time some of you people devote to attacking the packaging around the content on /.

The link is there. Ignore the rest if you want to, but its a sign of the times when the usual non-pissy /. users like me are starting to go off on posts like yours (see the reply to the FP .. wasn't me, but I feel the same way)

BTW, if you think artists right to make a living off of art through legislation such as copyright is more important than curing millions of people of deadly viruses and sicknesses .. we artists will always find a way of being supported by our community and peers with or without copyright. Stopping people from dying en masse is a tad more important than ensuring there is a law in place to allow artists to earn money outside of their community.

That's not to say that copyright isn't important, because obviously it is, but copyrights don't mean much to anybody unless they're alive.
