Alternative Art Media?

Anonymous Reader asks: "I'm writing an article on how creative uses of previously unexploited media are changing the way we think about art. My current examples include Telesymphony, Blinkenlights, and the KTH lasershow. Do Slashdotters know of any other projects that should find their place in my list?"

    Symphony for Dot Matrix Printers.

Seriously, these kinds of things were cool when someone thought to do one for the first time, but it's getting old. And the "art" was never very good, just kind of clever.

Along the same lines, the group Man.. or Astroman? does a song called "A Simple Text File" that is just that....a text file run through an old Apple ImageWriter II printer. (It's on their album "A Spectrum of Infinite Scale"). They've even been known to perform it "live".

As for it getting old, well thats the nature of new forms. It takes a while for them to achieve something more than novelty. Patience!

Frankly I'll take either at this point.

Not sure if this is a new media, but I thought it was cool when I first saw it. According to the LHPO web site: "The Large Hot Pipe Organ is the world's only MIDI controlled, propane powered explosion organ."

I was watching Fresh Gear over the summer, and they had a piece on a hotel in San Francisco (the name of the hotel escaps me) where they had a room where there were i think 5 or 6 plasma screens standing vertically with paintings on them. The cool thing about them is that not only would the paintings move, but they would "interact" with each other. That has to be the greatest idea for multimedia art I've ever seen.
