U.S. Ranks 17th in Freedom of the Press

reimero writes "According to this article on Yahoo! Germany the U.S. has experienced "serious restrictions" in freedom of the press, according to Reporters without borders' first worldwide press freedom index. Finland, Iceland, Norway and the Netherlands came in tops. An interesting study, to say the least."

Getting out of "Palestine" won't do any good. When Arabs massacred Jews in Hebron in 1920 and 1929, and elsewhere in the 1930s, that certainly didn't have anything to do with the State of Israel, which didn't exist yet. When all the neighboring Arab nations invaded Israel in 1948, it was billed as a war of "extermination". They focused on killing Israeli civilians instead of the military to the point that it seriously hurt their war effort. When all the neighboring Arab nations continued until 1967 to send commandos and artillery barrages across the border, directed always at Israeli civilians, that had nothing to do with the West Bank (which Jordan controlled), nor with Gaza (which Egypt controlled). When the PLO was founded in 1964 and immediately set about trying to kill Israeli civilians, that certainly wasn't a reaction to events which happened three years later.

Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the PFLP, and The Al-Aqsa Martyrs gang all have the same avowed goal: Getting rid of Israel completely. They're not shy about saying that, either. They will not accept the existence of Israel at all. They will not accept the existence of any Jews in the Middle East (which in time-honored blood-and-soil fashion they regard as "Arab land") who are not under Arab rule (or at all, depending on which spokesman you listen to). The "moderates" in those groups claim that they will accept the presence of those Jews whose ancestors lived on that land continuously since biblical times, and kill or deport the others; the main stream would rather kill any Jews they can get their hands on and disposess the rest (never mind the 850,000 or so Jewish refugees in Israel who were born in Arab nations, but had all their property confiscated and had to flee for their lives; those refugees apparently don't count -- and remember, I'm only counting the actual refugees, not adding in their children and relatives in the way that Palestinian refugee counts are so wildly inflated).

When Israel unilaterally withdrew from South Lebanon a couple of years back (though they had a perfect right to be there under international law, on the grounds that the Lebanese had been -- once again! -- coming over the border and massacring Israeli civilians), Hamas, PIJ, et al. in the PA all started clamoring for war. They claimed that Israel was weak, and would give them everything they wanted if they just massacred some Israeli civilians. Never mind that fifty-two years of massacres of Israeli civilians had so far accomplished nothing; never mind that "everything they wanted" is so absurdly unlikely: They wanted to kill some more. During the Oslo years (1993-2000), only 350 Israeli civilians were massacred by terrorists, and that's just not enough to keep an Islamic militant happy. Well, they got their war, for all the good it did them. That's where we are now.

Bottom line: Giving in to some of the terrorists' demands will not encourage them to drop the rest of their demands. To the contrary, they'll take it as encouragement to redouble their efforts. When you give in to extortion, the extortionist always demands more. Always. Ending the settlements is not Hamas' endgame. Their goal w/r/t Israel, like most of the rest of the Arab world, is ethnic cleansing on a grand scale, and they'll settle for nothing less. They'll never accomplish that, but bribing them to kill more civilians won't help them come to grips with the reality that a reasonable, just peace is the only option anybody's got (where "reasonable", "just", and "peace" mean "NOBODY kills ANYBODY" -- none of this European notion that "peace" means "the Jews stop defending themselves while the Arabs go on killing".)

Israel can stop the terrorism by ceasing to exist (not a real-world option), or by military force. Those are the only two options they've got.

Why does it surprise you that terrorists who use insane and unreasonable methods make insane and unreasonable demands? Israel has merrily made peace involving real and meaningful concessions (e.g. giving the Sinai with its oil back to Egypt), and kept the peace, with every Arab nation willing to come to the table. They bent way over backwards to make Oslo work, and they got a war in return. They've been trying to make peace with these people since 1948. What was the Arab reaction to UN 242? They all voted against that resolution (except IIRC Jordan), and then the Arab League got together in Khartoum and swore that they would never make peace with Israel, never negotiate with Israel, and never normalize relations with Israel. They rejected 242 so hard it bounced. Why? Because 242 was a recipe for peace in the region, and they wanted to play their little ethnic cleansing games instead. Look at the record. Read your history. None of this is secret information.
