States To Try Taxation Of The Net Again

An interesting, and alarming read if your interested in protecting online merchants from this taxation plan." 'though it's not really online sales that are the big ones people want -- it's catalog mail order sales, which are still much bigger then online sales.

Note2: I've received word that those links to yahoo actually point to goatse.cx. I am truly sorry about that, and I found the cause. A couple weeks ago, a hacker broke into yahoo and set up some scripts that redirect the user to goatse.cx if a file is in a certain directory. I accidentally tried to access a file in one of those haunted directories. I fixed the links (I have a cousin who works at yahoo), so they should bring you to the actual sites now, not goatse.cx. Update 10/28: The hacker, or should I say hax0r, actually has posted a page on yahoo on how he did it and how the goatse redirector works. It's a very good read. I suggest reading it soon before yahoo finds out about it and takes it down. Check it out ASAP [yahoo.com]!

WASHINGTON (AP) - Murder, rape and every other violent criminal act except aggravated assault rose last year, the FBI (news - web sites) said Monday in reporting the first year-to-year increase in overall crime in a decade.
The number of murders increased for the second straight year, following several years of decline, according to the FBI, which compiles its annual survey from crimes reported by 17,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide.

The point of slashdot has become to get your post or story in before everyone else does. Gone are the days when people actually considered if they had something to add to the discussion. These days, everyone jumps right in, with 30% of the posts belonging to trolls, 50% to people who are (attempting to be) funny and the rest to people who actually add insightful or informative information to the article.
Slashdot has become a parody of itself - the site that offers the freshest news offers the stalest of ideas (beowulf clusters, petrified natalie). Even a post like this is uber-meta: it doesn't deal with the site, it deals with the users and what has become of them.

(AP) Pop/rap popular culture icon, Marshall Mathers (aka "Eminem") was killed this afternoon after his privately chartered plane collided with harsh turbulence. Mathers was reportedly asked not to fly today because of weather concerns, but shrugged off concerns to promote his first motion picture, The 8th Mile.
