AIM And ICQ to be Integrated

sam writes "According to this InfoWorld article the next version of America Online's Instant Messenger will allow users to communicate with ICQ users in a move that will bridge the gap between the company's two popular chat services. Maybe AOL finally woke up and realized people were using IM clients that have both in them." I still use only IRC for messaging, but this is gonna make things easier for a lot of users.

AIM and ICQ are both owned by AOL. ICQ is the original IM. And at one point was the most poular. There have occasionally been UNIX knockoffs, like the vastly inferior command line "talk" implementation, however it was incapable of letting you know whne new users had signed on, also, it could not do file transfers.

Programs like Trillian, that do what the author of this article suggests have been having a difficult time lately because they steal Yahoo, AOL, and Microsofts intellectual property, in an attempt to make money. It's like companies like Kazaa and Gnucleus that make money off of other people trading files. It's illegal. And not a good idea.

This is just AOL doing what is best. They saw a duplication of effort in their own company and decided to stop it. I would bet that a lot more people would use Linux if Open Source programmers would wake up and realize that they also are (most of the time) duplicating effort. Gnome and KDE are but one example. Just search freshmeat for an mp3 database organizer one day, and you'll see what I mean.

There is not such thing as "duplacated effort". The projects such as the KDE and Gnome exist to offer freedom choices for the OSS Linux community. Without such choices, we would just be stuck with the same old boring GUI like M$ users have to deal with.

The different projects have different goals, that's all. For example, KDE is a MS Windows copy, while Gnome is a Free Sofware alternative. Not only is there a diversity of licensing involved, but there is also a huge difference in the look and feel. Gnome has anti-aliased fonts, vectorable icons and Evolution email client. KDE has themes that sort of use transparency to try to look like Aqua (but screws up sometimes LOL we need to help them out more) and an office suite and even a web browser. Then of course, there is X-Windows, which is the UNIX equivalent of Microsoft Windows, but it can't run over networks like Windows can (it's fairly new and still a work in progress).

All in all, this whole integration thing can only be good, it helps reduce duplicated effort in the community and helps people focus towards a common goal rather than fracturing into a myriad of incompatable APIs and kernels.

I was granted several thousand dollars to do some fairly simple research for AOL.

Some people here appear *angry* that we didn't choose [their favorite instant messaging protocol] and all I can say to you people is "grow up." The AIM/ICQ protocol is a fit for us. Your solution is a fit for you. Get over it. We know *quite well* how to run enterprise servers and community group solutions, and the decision to stick with what we already have was not made by the clueless.

Yes, we use Python. We use TCL. We use C/C++. We use Java. We use Apache. We use FreeBSD. We use Solaris. We use Windows. We use Linux. We use GCC. We use GPL software. We use BSD software. We use proprietary software. We use a lot of things. This isn't really news.
