Namibia Says "No Thanks" To Microsoft Donation With Strings
The Register posted an update about Namibia's SchoolNet, Microsoft "donations", and what looks like Namibia final decision. Apparently, MS's "donated" contributions would have been so small (and would have required such a large investment in OS licenses), that SchoolNet Namibia found it wasn't even worth bothering with. A very interesting article.

I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror/Sci Fi writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.

Fugitive panda found

A PANDA who managed to evade searchers for three months was found today in perfect health, sitting in a tree a short distance from the French animal farm from which it escaped, the park's owners said.
The six-year-old red panda, a female weighing 7kg, was discovered by a hunter around 15km from the Saint-Martin-la-Plaine park in central France.
The panda had already earned a reputation as a jail-break artist in Finland, where she was born. After having given her minders the slip several times there, she earned the name Escape.
Her French owners recovered her after putting a wire trap at the base of the tree, although one volunteer who helped wrestle her into a truck had to be treated when she bit his finger.
Pierre Thivillon, the owner of the animal park, said Escape was "in very good health", having survived on leaves and fruit.
He added that motherhood might slow the panda down. "It's possible she might have babies next spring because we received a male over the summer," he said.
