Building A Community Wireless Network From Scratch
adelayde writes "This summer I've been involved in a project to build a community-orientated wireless network in the city of Bristol, England. Recently I published an article ( mirrored here and here) describing what we have achieved so far, including some interesting thoughts on passive repeaters. There is a supporting site (mirrored here) with detailed instructions on how to build antennae, and the main project web site is also available here. A bit of own trumpet blowing perhaps, but I think it'll be of interest to those readers involved in similar projects and be of some help to those thinking of starting their own."

How _DARE_ you insult our great fearless leader? Terrorist!
Back in college, in an advanced networking class, the students had to do a grueling semester-long project: one of those groups chose a wireless community.
In their group was an idealistic young man named Alan -- a man I knew, but didn't quite get along with well enough to be good friends with him -- who wanted to build a community wireless network down in the city's Martin Luther King apartment complex (aka the projects, the ghetto) in conjunction with a university program funded by a city grant that was giving away 486/Pentium I's to the poor in that section of town.
But while the group -- there were about 12 of them, I think -- was in the ghetto, surveying the area, looking for places to set up their equipment, they were approached by a group of young black men who told them something to the effect of "get tha fuck outta here, whiteboyz."
They tried to explain what they were doing to the young men, but within a minute, they were severely beaten up by the gang. Two of them, including Alan, were knocked unconscious, and when the hospital got there, the ambulance had to wait for police support because they were attacked by the same gang who smashed their windshield with baseball bats. Needless to say, the group ended up in the hospital for a week, and had to repeat all their classes the next semester, and though they got some of their money back, they chose a different project.
I'm not making this up -- though I'm sparing details for anonymity's sake, do a google search with words from the story, as it was probably published online.
The moral of the story? Don't do a wireless community project in the bad part of town without proper security.
I sugest that you not build your wireless network from the same kind of scratch that my Aunt Millie usues to make her biscuts. You woulden't want it to be all warm and flakey.
Hey, thanks for the laugh before I hit the sack.
Yes! And I have ALREADY WON!
Feh, it's only karma.
>I know this has been mentioned in another post, but apropros of this article, the Waterloo Wireless [waterloowireless.org] group is (or was, I haven't heard from them in some time) trying for complete world domination at 11Mbit/sec.
Any info on how to "join"? I'm relatively interested now I see there's some meaty content there, and my area could _seriously_ use an ISP of some sort (past 21.6k dialup).
Very interesting project.

Even though you don't like the man, it's our job as Americans to support him. He's our President.
