Understanding Bandwidth and Latency

M. Woodrow, Jr. writes "Ars has a very eye-opening article on the real causes of bandwidth latency and why we should just drool endlessly over maximum throughput issues. In particular, I think the author's look into the PowerPC 970 and the P4's frontside bus is interesting considering how we're constantly being told by marketers that more speed is always going to translate into massive performance gains. The issue is, of course, far more complex, and this article does a good job of thinking about the problem from an almost platform agnostic point of view."

I know this is a bit off-topic, but...how many of you actually need a computer that's faster than the top of the line out there now? How many of you have found computer speed to be a major impedence on your productivity? Consumer demand for high-end machines is mostly driven by computer games. I honestly don't see why CPU speed is still so important to so many people.

The main reason I don't vote democratic is that they are cowardly and do not present any kind of real oppositiion to the republicans.

Wasn't the vote for the DMCA unanimous? Lots of democrats voting for corporate interests. Look at the large number of democrats who voted for Bush' resolution on war in Iraq.

I feel that the democratic party has outlived its usefulness and needs to be replaced by a party that will live true to its ideals.

I see some chance that the democratic party will survive and I might vote for them again - if they lose enough membership to the greens that they decide they must change, develop some spine and put up a real opposition to the republicans.

Ultra 320 SCSI - WRONG Fibre Channel is best.

There are more 2 Gigabit port devices available than SCSI320.

true, SCSI 320 is 320 megabytes per second per port and FIBRE is only 2.125 billion bots per second and after 10-to-8 byte conversion is 200 megabytes per second per port, fibre is FASTER? Why? LATENCY and OVERHEAD. Fiber channel 2 gigabit per port cards on pc and mac from JNI, Emulaex, Qlogic, Astera, LSI, ATTO are faster than SCSI 320.

They do over 20,000 to almost 30,000 IOs per second. And using TWO laser connectorsinstead of one (all vendors offer two ported pci and pci-x cards) the speed of a Fibre channle card trumps SCSI. SCSI takes 40 micorseconds merely to arbitrate a cold device under scsi 320 minimum. Fibre completes a complete io request in that time!

Fibre uses lasers and is also BIDERECTIONAL per port. The chips handle 2000 IOs at a time overlapping and use one interrupt or less per IO, and because of biderectional nature of Fibre allow 200 megabytes per second in and out simulatneously (400 MB sec!)

And thats for one connector, if you look at all the venoders they all make 2 port cards. And though the cards are 1,500 to 2,500 each, they are 133Mhz PCI-X 64 bit screamers.

I have Fibre in my computer and though love SCSI and SCSI 320, I know that FIBRE is the only true high speed solution because it is the lowest latency and the highest bandwidth.

SCSI320 over laser optics might compete, but Fibre trancieversfrom JNI and others will soon be 10 gigabits per second in 2003.

    10 gigabits per port!!!

Then SCSI320 will not be merely 20 to 40% slower it will be 100% to 2000% slower!

The problem? PCI is slow slow slow. Even at 66 Mhz and 64 bit its supposed to be almost 500 MB sec but its slower on read than write and only PCI-X can help and NOBODY uses pci-x yet at all except 3 platforms : Hammer, Itanium, and XEON. Worse, no PCI-X systems offer guaranteed compliant PCI slots... all are pci-x and crippled PCI. Not one genuine legit real 100% to spec PCI slot on a mobo with PCI-X as well. Its all garbage and a mess.
