rrwood writes "The latest Cringely is out. In it, Bob give his take on P2P and Big Media and where it's all going. Nothing new there, but as usual, the interesting part is what SlashDotters will say here afterward."

It is a story, one about how even those that purport to know something really know nothing. For example there was a Sigourny Weaver movie made on Digital Video for less than $150K, and alot of us/.ers have seen the Platrix and South Powers and lots of other great short animation on the net, lets look at the simple economics, movie making equipment is cheaper than ever, mainly due to DV and computer animation / editing, you can't sneeze in LA without hitting a wannabe actor/actress parking cars or waiting tables, not to mention the hordes of stage acting talent in every major city on the planet, sets can be digitally created, who knows maybe one day all films will be shot on blue screens and the set added digitally later. What is left for lavish expenses? Costumes? Cringelys article is a tour de force of the type of myopic thinking that all these "pundits" engage in, and if he's really good in ten years he'll claim my writing as his own and be praised as a visionary./cynical bastard

Why isn't there a "Cringely" icon for slashdot? It seems that every time he publishes something, it ends up here!
Fuck that, why isn't there a "-1 Same-Old-Cringely-Complaints" moderation option for every time I read this exact same comment in a Cringely talkback?
C'mon, you're a robot, aren't you?

HERE HERE!!
People seem to have a lot of trouble understanding the basics here. I used to work at a major ISP in the uk and I now run a very small one and I can say that both ends of the market would happily see p2p users fuck off somewhere else.
This is especially true in the UK, here the primarily motivation for using broadband really is cost, not speed, there are only a couple of unmetered ISP service that offer a decent level of service here.
Building and running an ISP is not a cheap business to be in, and whilst casual p2p useage isnt really a problem the real issue is people taking the piss with it. Nothing gets me more annoyed than hearing a bunch of people claim they have the morale right to fuck people over, ultimately all they do is ruin it for the rest of us.
There is a prevailing attitude in this community where by if something isnt right or is perhaps illegal, but is possible, then you create some line of bullshit to try and justify it.
When I was a kid, you did bad things and you took your chances and if you got caught you got caught, you took your punishment, you didnt devote your time and effort to taking some kind of false morale high ground.
