Life Confirmed At Extreme Depths
SEWilco writes "A few years ago the life forms around deep-ocean thermal vents were a surprise. Now ancient bacteria alive in rock 2 miles down have been found. The story is in the San Francisco Chronicle. It is also at Nature.Com, but that server is already rejecting connects. Other bacteria survived frozen in the pressures of an ocean 100 miles deep. This increases the known limits of where life can exist on any planet. Thomas Gold undoubtedly is not surprised at hot, deep bacteria living on hydrogen."
fp
you were the first post, they found my first post, way at the bottom of the ocean in a rock, and its even older.

At least you waited a few days to repost this, nice try janitors, YHBC!
No, no, no. That would be life in the dark. (Like more readers are)
is there life at these depths?
Thomas Gold is my Step Grandfather...How cool for him to be mentioned here. He is one smart guy.
..extreme depths are found within LIFE!
Dear Sir,
I'd like to inform you of your blatant karma whoring. The odds of these servers being taken down by what is known as the 'Slashdot effect' are remote.
Therefore, your post is unnecessary and should be modded redundant immediately. Because of your lack of ability to post an insightful thought or interesting information in regard to the story, you find it necessary to repost articles here in an effort to gain 'karma.'
Please refrain from these actions in the future; failure to do so will result in your dismissal from the website as a Slashdot user.
Respectfully,
CmdrTaco

now maybe they'll find life on uranus...
Yes, and hot deep life no less.
If you mod me down the terrorists will have won
Whoa there. Yes it was groundbreaking in the 70's. This has been a standard in Oceanographic texts since before I started. Sure its deeper than expected, but the overall picture is an extension of existing theory, not something new. And as far as farming... Hydrogen sulfide is poisonous and the vent temperatures are hot enough to melt the first thermometers used to measure them, so its not as easy as potatoes. And I would have to look at the bacterial production rates again, but I would guess that the entire global vent systems would not support much of a human population, let alone its appetite.
At fucking shit up? Starting wars? Incarcerating people for any reason? Conflict of interests? Favoring energy companies? Manipulating elections (national and local)? Snorting coke? Blowing your dad?
Please. Clinton was/is an idiot. Bush is an evil fuck. Get it though your water-filled head. Bush doesn't give a ratfuck about you. You are a goddamn dollar sign. Fuck you and wake up.
And to answer your question, with people like you out there, I'd like X1000 better these brainless microbes voting than you.
There you have it.
>At fucking shit up?
And Clinton didn't ever fuck anything up?
>Starting wars?
The U.S. didn't start this shit.
>Incarcerating people for any reason?
The incarcerated people you are referring to are TERRORISTS or were captured COMBATANTS in Afghanistan and all are in custody with reason. Stop making it sound like the US is being overrun with concentration camps.
>Conflict of interests?
Just look at the list of last-minute Clinton pardons if you want to talk about conflict of interest.
>Favoring energy companies?
As opposed to what? Oh, and ENRON sure is better off because of the favoritism, huh. What with it being out of business and its execs in deep shit.
>Manipulating elections (national and local)?
Give me a fucking break already. Do you have proof? Just look at the last round of Florida elections. They STILL fucked it up. The elections weren't fixed; they are just simply morons down there.
>Snorting coke?
Yes he did. And Clinton smoked fatties in college.
>Blowing your dad?
WTF? Clinton's the one who got his dick sucked in the oval office.
>Bush doesn't give a ratfuck about you.
Who said he (or any other politician) does/did. Of course they don't care.
>You are a goddamn dollar sign.
That's right. And what's wrong with that?
but that server is already rejecting connects
The original news posting mentions that Nature.com is rejecting connections, and it was it took a fairly long time to download the page when I accessed it. I find it quite helpful that the article is here so I do not have refresh many times to access the page in question. Also posting the article here will allow many more people to read the article that usually wouldn't before posting. In situations like these where the original article is unavailable or difficult to reach, reposting of the article is a very informative step.
Your above accusation of "karma whoring" is in no way a useful addition to the discussion of the article and therefore YOU sir are trolling.
No, that sounds like Yoda. It's a SOVIET RUSSIA joke, right? More like this:
IN SOVIET RUSSIA...the joke tells YOU!
Make sense? Keep practicing, and you'll get the hang of it! It is pretty funny shit, though, isn't it?
From http://people.cornell.edu/pages/tg21/Life.html
All of biology is just a device for degrading energy available from chemical sources, and on the surface from the great temperature differential between the hot surface of the Sun and the cold of space. Perhaps biology is just a branch of thermodynamics, and there is no sudden beginning of life, but a gradual systematic development towards more and more efficient ways of degrading energy.
Of course, this implies that humans and our activities are a part of nature--which flys in the face of most modern day "environmentalists"

That's wonderful if you're military, but how about everybody else? Remember, money doesn't come out of thin air. If Bush gives you money that means that less is available for somebody else.
IMHO it'd be much better if Bush stopped wasting so much money on war and gave all that to education. It seems America seriously lacks people who can see farther than their nose.
Bush just gave Military another pay raise. The man putting more money in my pocket certainly doesn't constitute an "evil fuck".
I'm sure hitler gave the military lots of pay rases. But he was still an evil fuck.
autopr0n is like, down and stuff.
Life, don't talk to me about life!
Does the chip in your head hurt when you talk?
