Lindows CEO Funds XBox Hacking Contest

Kai writes "PCWorld.com recently posted an article on how Lindows CEO Michael Robertson is funding the 'Linux on XBox Hacking Challenge'. He was previously annonymous donor who donated $200,000 to the project. His donation will be split in to two prizes, one to who completes part A of the challenge, and the other to the who completes part B. Part A, running Linux on the XBox, has already been completed, but Part B, running Linux on XBox with no hardware modifications has yet to be completed. Part A of the challenge can be downloaded from Sourceforge." Without a bios change, it seems like part B might be a bit tricky. T. adds: Tricky, but not hopeless. Eric C. writes "The Neo Project recently updated its client so users can use free processor cycles to try and crack the private key that Microsoft uses to sign Xbox software."

Michael's apartment looked like a hamster's maze of whitewashed identical boxy rooms that showed very little in the way of creature comforts. It was 7pm, and whilst there was a darkish blue sky outside above the streets it wasn't much brighter inside Michael's airtight little dwelling.
This was truly the home of a Unix hacker. Most of the lighting came from Michael's community of various *nix boxes, each there own little part of a greater network.
As Michael showed Ryan the way to the apartments main living space he had the casual demeanour of a man who had perhaps spent most of his life in just such a place as this.
Ryan was nervous to note that all Michael had on was a blue/red stripy flannel dressing gown and a pair of sandals.
His beard was thick enough to be seen, even from behind.
Again, Ryan questioned his decision in coming here.
And yet, no... he pushed the strange thought at the back of his mind aside.

At the end of a short tight hallway Michael slowed his pace as he reached an area composed of kitchen/dining room, bedroom and bathroom.
Maybe here Ryan would get to see some answers to his module debugging queries.
"That's the eating room." Said Michael as he gestured to the right. "I do some of my eating in there."
Hah, cool, thought Ryan as he nodded his head.
Michael swung an arm casually off to the left.
"That's where I do some sleeping, got a few kernel modifications compiling in there," and sure enough, when Ryan looked in there was the flicker of a white on black screen disgorging a never ending parade of messages.
"I also carry out most of my sexual acts in there, it's a nice warm room, especially in Winter.
Wacking off to my latest modifications is a big hobby of mine at the moment."
Michael looked back at Ryan with a big manly grin.
"Perrrr-haps you'd like to go in," and with a slight flourish he stepped back and around offering Ryan the way in.

Ryan knew he had begun blushing. That same damn beetroot red effect that always came into effect when his sister teased him.
He knew he had been caught in a trap. Deny that he was here for a little sexual initiation, and risk going back on the discussion he had had with Michael the other day. Or step into that room and face the very possibility that he was perhaps just a tiny little bit... homosexual?
Some of Michael's words from the other day came back to him. How Unix programming was naturally a female free institution. Unlike the world of Windows programming Unix programmers led the way. Indeed they had to or common man would still be struggling with a meager 640 kilobytes of RAM. To build a better future for man, woman and child the brave had to tackle the mysteries of hardcore bit-coding.
And if the brave happened to be mostly men - so be it - for they were men of action, of deeds, noble and proud.
"Face it Ryan," Michael had said, "Unix programming and love homosexual love go hand in hand."
And that had been enough at the time to get Ryan to cautiously agree to this meeting.
