Gentlemen, Hack Your Engines!

Les Gasser writes "Ahh, drag racing! If you've never experienced the scent of nitro or the flashing flames of a top fueler running 320MPH+ in 4+ seconds in a standing-start quarter mile run at dusk, you're missing world-class performance art. (See 'High Performance' for the classic on drag racing history and culture). Now the NYTimes (registration needed) has 'Gentlemen, Start Hacking Your Engines,' an article on 're-engineering' engine control computers for maximum performance, combining the drag racing and tech-geek traditions." Having learned everything I know about racing from Gran Turismo, I'm amazed to learn there's more than just buying a "racing chip".

I saw it a few times here.. the enviro-nazi's saying .. but it doesn't increase fuel economy.. ..umm...

ok.. you have an engine that's running rich from the factory to reduce NOx emissions.. so what do we nasty's do with our engines..

lean them out (use less fuel) and bump up the timing (start burning the fuel sooner)..

The result.. less fuel is used and more of the fuel that is used is burned but NOx might climb slightly..

It's all about efficency you dolts.. The only time we add more fuel.. is when we add more air.

CARB rules/regs suck because it doesn't all those of us who actually modify our cars for increased efficency to do it legally..

There are plenty of cars that have been modified in california that not only make 50+hp more than the factory originally sold the car with, but also get better emissions..

Enviro-nazi's.. ruining our fun daily.. and ya.. Canada is looking to adopt CARB rules..

So now instead of building clean buring performance engines.. we have to build engines that are so choked up with emission equipment that any performance is an after thought..

I've been drag racing for a few years. I own a 98 AND an 02 Pontiac Formula. 320 HP of NA stock power.
Of course the cars a tweaked.. But certainaly not as much as these Honduhs.
I'll never understand it. I spank those riced out, fart can cars every chance I get. I have yet to meet one I havent dusted.
Sure, there are some fast honduhs out on the street, but the odds on meeting one is about 1 in a scabizzilion. And those guys ALWAYS have more money invested. They typically have 15-20 grand into those cars. And they are always pouring in more cuz they are always breaking.
Sure..It made a 12sec pass at the track. But how many times can it do that before it goes boom?
I can run mid 12's all day, then drive the car to work the next day.
I prefer the power and longevity of an big 'ol American V8 wrapped in a killer and SAFE(5 star crash rated) Pontiac Formula. I was in a honduh..once. After checking out the paper thin doors and panels, I swore never to set foot in one of those death traps again.

Sure, make it go fast, invest tons of cash..but at the end of the day, its still your mommies hand me down grocery getter Honduh.
