Bushfires Destroy Historic Mt. Stromlo Observatory
Anthony writes "The historic Mt Stromlo observatory has been destroyed by fires. Unfortunately Google cache and similar archives are the only available detailed information. Looks like the web site was housed at the observatory. Telescopes housed there were 74" and 50" reflectors along with the "Oddie" 9" refractor used by the Canberra Astronomical Society. Also destroyed were a number of student houses and workshops. The view from the air is one of molten domes and twisted metal. These fires have already destroyed 388 houses in the suburbs of Canberra. Luckily the winds have not picked up today, but the danger is still high."
YOU FAIL IT!

Maybe the time has come to rename the Slashdot 'staff' from editors to accepters (of submissions) or, more appropriately, rejecters.

These buddhist monks, see, they create these beautiful paintings out of colored sand. They take a dozen monks weeks to finish. When they're done, they take one look at their finished artwork, and then they sweep it all away.
Impernanence, and all that.
Also, there are embassy's in Canberra, right? This would be the perfect time to set yourself on fire in front of them.
The good and new comes from no quarter where it is looked for, and is always something different from what is expected.
....dying Australians make jokes about YOU!
I haven't ssen any jokes about dying Australians yet. Nobody died at the observatory, right? It might still be wrong to make jokes about this destruction.
It may be too soon to make jokes while the fires are still burning. But I suspect even people who lost their homes and ended up in the hospital will be making jokes about it. In a way they have a right to do it, while people who are un-affected seem to not have the same amount of justification. It looks like laughing at the victims, rather than laughing with them.
I think it comes down to the state of mind of the person making a joke, but that doesn't really communicate well through a written medium like this one.
well, actually, an 83 year old woman did die at the observatory ...
