Earthquake Data

ctwxman writes "There's no doubt governments around the world have built a fine network of sensors to monitor earthquakes. Yet, when I want to see what's happening, I go to the Redwoood City Public Seismic Network, http://psn.quake.net/. Within five minutes, amateurs, most far away from Redwood City and using homebuilt equipment (yes, there are links to instructions on how you can build your own), have posted their seismogram plots http://psn.quake.net/cgi-dos/event.exe. It's astounding that 'just plain folks' can sense the Earth move halfway around world. And, It's neater to see with your own eyes."

Please take that link to the executable down. It rebooted my system and now there is a program running called svchost.exe. I cannot kill it from TaskMan.

If you do execute the program, boot into safe mode and delete svchost.exe from your Windows\system32 directory.

This is not Klez like another poster mentioned.

They are one of the most hit servers in the government. I think they can take a back page Slashdot linking.

The reason in this case is that there is some kind of server-side execution going on. So the .exe can be read as .cgi or what have you.

A little effort on the part of the webmaster could have hidden that extension and just executed the CGI program behind the scenes.

there was a 7.6 quake w/ epicenter in Colima, Mexico (a bit south of Puerto Vallarta, west coast) that hit a few hours ago. Shook the house a fair deal here in Guadalajara. Far as I can tell, Guadalajara (only six million people) is a deal closer to the epicenter than Mexico City, but the sensationalist US media seem to think nobody else exists. Oh well.
