Safari Killing Opera for Mac OS X?

analog_line writes "According to an article at News.com, the folks at Opera have given an ultimatum to Apple: Use the Opera engine in Safari or we'll have to rethink developing Opera for the Mac. While I know people who use Opera for the Mac, I find it hard to believe that Opera thinks they'll get any response other than, 'enjoy developing for one less platform.'"

Quite frankly, I've stopped caring about MacOS compatibility in light of announcements like this.

Frankly, KHTML is trash, pure and simple. The 2.x version can't handle CSS2 worth a damn, I see the 3.x version crash and burn on more sites than *Netscape 4*, and the design philosophy attempts to be to bring WinMSIE's boneheaded and f***ing annoying bugs to other platforms.

If Mac users want to go for substandard garbage like that, they don't deserve quality. Let 'em die. Watch me not care.

Opera makes an Mac version? Who knew?

Seriously, though -- Opera must have a smaller "market share" than iCab, let alone OmniWeb, IE, Gecko-flavors or...well, smaller than ANYthing that browses on the Mac.

All I've ever seen from Opera is a delayed, three-steps-behind version that has been seemingly produced as a grudging, halting afterthought on the Mac. Why should I care? Essentially, we're being told "A product that nobody used BEFORE Safari came out is being discontinued because something else that IS popular has been released.". I'm supposed to care about something that is inferior, under-supported and over-priced?

    Dear Apple,

I am a homosexual. I bought an Apple computer because of its well earned reputation for being "the" gay computer. Since I have become an Apple owner, I have been exposed to a whole new world of gay friends. It is really a pleasure to meet and compute with other homos such as myself. I plan on using my new Apple computer as a way to entice and recruit young schoolboys into the homosexual lifestyle; it would be so helpful if you could produce more software which would appeal to young boys. Thanks in advance.

    with much gayness,

Anything Apple releases will immediately become the number one program in its class on the mac, number two AT WORST, heading for number one. That's just how it is. Apple users love the company Apple, they believe in the Apple ethos, the "Think different" vibe, they love to support movie stars and politicians who choose Apples over Microsoft. I know, I'm one of them. I irritate my wife by yelling "Macintosh!" every time a Mac shows up on a movie or TV. And it doesn't matter if Apple's a monopoly or not, we WILL choose an inferior Apple branded program just because it's Apple branded. Just the same way the IT guys at work only buy Microsoft because it's Microsoft, or they used to say "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". Competition in any market Apple decides to release their own product in IS OVER.

It was under a week before one of the big Chimera coders threw in the towel, saying "They've won". Apple won with a buggy beta version of a browser that lacked features, basic tables rendering, and stability - but it was Apple-branded. And that's all it takes to divide and conquer.

Opera on OS X is dead. So is Omni. So is iCab. They don't have a chance, any of them. So is IE on the Mac, although it's harder to kill MS. I knew it the minute Apple released their own browser. It's funny, nobody remembers how Microsoft used to announce new products the week before a competitor announced theirs, just to kill the competition and let them know they might as well not finish that app they were working on, because nobody will buy it once MS' comes out. NAME RECOGNITION is a weapon. This isn't any different, except Apple doesn't announce things beforehand, because they NEED as many developers as they can get, because of the miniscule mac marketshare, but they also need to own as big a slice of that tiny pie as possible. So Apple lets the indy developers waste their resources on products that will never have a chance of being profitable, because keeping things secret is the best thing for Apple Corporation.

Once Apple releases their new office suite, MS Office is dead as well. Avid is dying. ProTools will die if Apple competes more directly with them. Third-party vendors shouldn't even bother supporting the platform, BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE A CHANCE OF WINNING. Apple has the massively powerful home field advantage, just like Microsoft does on Windows, except with the advantages of less competition due to the smaller marketshare, and far more goodwill and faithfulness with the customers. There IS no competition possible when Apple gets into the ring. **You can't fight city hall**.

Third-party vendors should at least port all their stuff to Linux, where they can't be screwed over by a competitor with an unfair advantage, and focus on supporting a "non-denominational" operating system that enables an even playing field.... Hmmm.... that last comment will get me modded -1, Heretical, so forget I said it.
