Mac vs. PC Digital Photography Comparison Redux

Macmurph writes "Bibble Labs has released a lightning fast version of the RAW image convertor, MacBibble. According to MacBibble creator, Eric Hyman, "MacBibble 3.x is almost 10 times faster than the manufacturers software when converting RAW files under OSX.". Prelimenary tests indicate the Mac may be faster than PCs in RAW image conversion afterall. This calls into question the relevance of the the hotly debated article Rob Galbraith posted just 3 weeks ago and discussed here on Slashdot. Two thumbs up for the PowerPC G4's AltiVec vector processing engine, now being put to work in MacBibble."

Wow, what an incredibly *un*-enlightened post. First, the FPU on the P4 is one of the weakest ever implemented in consumer-land personal computers. Can anybody guess why? Because Intel had the expectation that SSE2 would be used for all the heavy-lifting floating point operations (graphics manipulation, media encoding, etc) which typically are vectorized. Your post is the equivalent to saying "Ya know, I'm a programming dude, and I write stuff for both G4 and P4. I decided to write this app one day, and I wrote it in C++ for the Mac. Using the compiler on the Windoze box was way too hard, so I just decided to write it as a batch file. And you know what? The Mac was WAAAAY faster. Dude! These Macs are AWESOME!!" I weep for the company that relies on your technical savvy to try and eek out a profit.

Jobs' software's ok. NeXT was adequate, but besides his graphics rendering, was WAY OVERPRICED and NOT WORTH IT. OS X is getting better, but it's not enough to keep Apple afloat.

Look, shill, IBM could make 10 million ghz processors and 30234 megabit wireless a standard on their PC's, IF THEY THOUGHT ANYONE WOULD BE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY THE *HUGE* PREMIUM ON IT!!! Yes, the technology on Macs is 3 to 5 years out there, *for a reason*!

Only Mac users are gullible enough to APPLAUD a company making expensive Gigabit ethernet stock when so very few have networks capable of using its full potential. And what's up with this 802.11g networking? Do you know how fast your cable modem is? How much of that 802.11g's bandwidth is left over? The infrastructure's not there to support it. You'll upgrade before you get to really use any of this stuff. And I love the widescreens on the new PB's, but they're not actual widescreen aspect ratio. Widescreens are 1.78, this is 1.6. WTF? And you wouldn't need the extra room for your apps if damn Apple would put back in the multiple terminals every other Unixy product in the world has. Damn Crippled Unix. You're getting shafted, paying for *way* more accessories than you need, but with a low powered CPU that will have you upgrading in a year, before you could even *find* a network that uses Gigabit ethernet.

RISC is *theoretically* a good design. But Moto's real-world implementation is lacking. And for god's sakes, man, the speed advantage is about *a maximum* of 30% overall over CISC. That means a 3Ghz CISC still kills any G4 out there. They'll probably kill the G5's, too.

Apple is a speck on the PC world's radar. A SMALL speck. And unfortunately, they probably WILL go under soon. Even with the coolness of OS X and their new hardware, they're losing marketshare. They're getting squeezed to death because they don't run Windows. They're not compatible with Windows. They don't run Windows software. They have limited hardware choices. They are after a niche market that is being attacked from all sides. We switch because we hate MS, but I hear more negative stuff Apple's doing than Microsoft. Apple is getting just as bad. And Windows XP and 2000 just don't suck that bad anymore, and in a couple years, Linux is going to blow all of the competition away, what with every country and tech company in the known universe developing for it.

RC5 is twice as fast. Whatever. The other 3000 tests are a CISC landslide. Anyway, my "Hello, World" beats your "Hello, world". And it runs on 95% of the world's computers.

"Funny how a lot of these same users bashed MacOS (up to 9.x) for not having true preemptive multitasking, etc. etc. ..."

Did you take a survey and find out that most of the same people that bashed MacOS 9.x are touting their new wintel dual cpu machine?

Funny how you are bashing windows for crashing when the problem lies with drivers from a 3rd party driver from Handspring, and has absolutely nothing to do with a problem with the actual OS. And then try to contrast these problems with the MacOS to try to make it look better than it is, even though classic os is a POS and the features you list have nothing to do with eachother.

Conclusion: You are a mac troll. (not that I would expect any different on the mac forum on /.)
