Hollywood Says No to Filtering DVD Player
haplo21112 writes "There is a posting over at ZDNet about how Hollywood continues to trample on the American consumer's free use rights. They want to prevent the sale of a special DVD player which can be used to edit out offensive material from a DVD in realtime. While I don't agree with censorship in general, I do believe its everyone's right to do what they wish with their own media."

A movie is art. Offensive or not it is art and it is the vision of the director. Just like real art can not be sensored either should movies.
Grow up. You can't handle the mushy stuff or something? Don't try to put that bs down on the page as if you have some sort of higher moral values now that you don't want to watch some people get their freak on, on tv. If you don't enjoy gore, then don't watch movies that contain it. It is my opinion that unless its a cheap p.o.s. movie all of the scenes have some sort of meaning or importance to the rest of the movie. If the movie wasn't appropriate for children prior to the violence / sex, can you really assume that it is afterwards? Regardless of your opinion, how many parents will think this 'magical' technology makes all movies OK for their children to watch. Please take into account that not all people are of the same intelligence, and many can't even make good decisions.
/they shouldn't be listening to that song. Leave the art alone. If you don't like it, TO BAD. I believe art is a form of speech, and by modifying their art, you are MODIFYING THEIR SPEECH. Wether you want to look at it that way or not, that is the truth. This filtering is not right. Do not support it.
2) It is my opinion that these movies are an art. If people wanted to *censor* parts of Picasso's Guernica, I'm sure people would be opposed to it. By the same token, these directors actors, and writers work should not be censored in this fashion. I am coming from the point of view that the afore-mentioned peoples have some sort of message or lesson which they would like to convey through their story. I would be offended if people wanted to strip parts of my art away so that 'it would be appropriate' for their children to see. By removing pieces, you are changing the message, and it is no longer that persons art. It is synonymous from changing it from its original form, and presenting it as if nothing has changed. Its a lie. So go ahead. Lie to yourself and lie to your children. Watch where it gets you. Movies aren't what make kids go crazy and shoot people. Movies aren't what make people afraid. Movies aren't what make people kill other people. These actions are born out of the real-life enviroments people are subjected to. Go watch bowling for columbine. I don't think he would want his movie censored.
Who decides what is offensive and what is not? and if its you, what makes you so god damned special. Leave the movie in its full form, and if you don't feel your children are not ready to see it, leave it in the closet until you feel they are old enough to make their own decisions. If you don't want to see some people kiss, grow up. If you don't want to see people get killed, then take a look at the world around you and do something to make what you see in the movies a fiction.
If someone wants to shoot back with 'music is censored on the radio' i say, it shouldn't be, and if it 'needs to be censored for your or your childrens ears' then you
Another tidbit: there is no advantage for these people to *not* have this tech. In fact they might sell more movies if it were allowed. Because of this fact, I believe they are sincerely commited to their ART. and do not want it altered from their VISION.
