    These things are blank looking, with a few sparse buttons....They all look equally boring.

    I think the term you're searching for is elegant:

    Yeah, before MP3s everyone was completely chatty at 8:45am on a weekday morning while riding public transportation.

    Get real. Our society has been becoming less and less social a long time before portable MP3 players hit the scenes.

    To counter-act anything that MP3 players have caused, cell phones have made us able to contact distant friends and relatives when we are doing mundane things like riding the bus.
