NARAS vs. the RIAA

sdbrian writes "An all around excellent paper concerning the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and their position with regard to the RIAA has been published on Salon.com. The author (John Snyder) quotes from many articles that have been discussed on here on Slashdot. One of Snyder's conclusions, "NARAS should take the lead in this matter. Those who are taking it now are leading us over a cliff. The RIAA has staked out an untenable position that is as unrealistic as it is anti-consumer and anti-artist.""

    For those of us that have been watching /. for the past months/years, this article could seriously be a compilation of the comments, quotes, and links that we have posted here.

    I was particularly annoyed by the full-screen ad that I got as I went to read the story, then a follow up ad taking up the bottom corner of the screen.

    You're linking to an ad.

    Salon.com changes links to the story into links to an ad unless the Referer: points to Salon.com. This allows Salon to add an interstitial advertisement. Yahoo! Groups does the same thing.

    You are so wrong it's not even funny. More white people use drugs! Read this article Here is a relavent pasage:
    That's right: white high school students are seven times more likely than blacks to have used cocaine; eight times more likely to have smoked crack; ten times more likely to have used LSD and seven times more likely to have used heroin. In fact, there are more white high school students who have used crystal methamphetamine (the most addictive drug on the streets) than there are black students who smoke cigarettes.

    What's more, white youth ages 12-17 are more likely to sell drugs: 34% more likely, in fact than their black counterparts. And it is white youth who are twice as likely to binge drink, and nearly twice as likely as blacks to drive drunk. And white males are twice as likely to bring a weapon to school as are black males.


    Please keep your racism to yourself.
