California Considering More Internet Taxes
dcg writes "San Francisco Chronicle is reporting on how web taxes could help the states, especially California, with its budget woes. One particularly disconcerting comment is from California's Controller Steve Westly. 'In addition to sales taxes, Westly said he is considering a tax on Internet access like those that appear on telephone bills. He also is looking at a tax on software downloads.' Would this affect only purchased software, or could sourceforge.net become a source of revenue for the state..."

The Democratic party in CA is incompetent. 5th largest economy in the world, but one of the worst state credit ratings because of all the debt incurred. Is it a cooincidence that CA is being run by the Democratic party? Davis' policies caused a power disaster in CA. I still here power conservation PSAs on the radio in an age where SUV sales are approaching 50% of car sales. That's not an energy crisis, that's govt. incompetence at regulating an industry that should be left to open market. CA sales tax is 8% and they're considering raising it. Now internet taxes PLUS internet access fees. I wish people in CA would get a clue and stop electing Democrats into office.

A typical Republican response: we charged California exhauberant prices for
electicity. Not because we had the state by the balls and there was nobody to stop us,
but because of the protestors and evnviromentalist who prevented us to build us
to build more plants -- as if building more plants would have prevented the desire
