ACLU And Others Weigh In On CIPA Injunction

A report on censorware.net has an update on the legal fight over the Children's Internet Protection Act; yesterday the ACLU, ALA and others filed briefs supporting the injunction calling CIPA unconstitutional issued by a three-judge court last May. The Supreme Court will hear the case on March 5th. (A search on "CIPA" is a good way to catch up on this act, which is basically about installing mandatory censorware on child-accessable publicly funded computers.)

..Net, especially VS.Net w/ C#, is the most productive Web development / OOP tool on the planet. Period.

You know the figures, 7x faster than J2EE with 1/4th the code. It's true, I've developed in both and will attest to it.

Open source is great, I'll switch as soon as ASP.Net is ported to Linux. Till then, gimme my .Net.

I agree with a lot of what you have said. I only use .NET for programming in good ol' Visual C++ and if it were up to me I'd still be using VS 6.0, C# is marketting babble that I have no plans of even wasting my time looking into, but I find a lot of your rantings laughable.

To count on the "SPIRIT of computing" to advance the technology of computer software is scary. If I'm going to use online banking or undergo computerized surgery, the last thing I'd want is software written by some hACKERz that they wrote for the "fun" of it. Give me a break!

The idea of depending on software supported by an underground network geeks in basements scares the hell out of me. Anyone who can't manage to get paid for at least 40 hours of kicks a week in software engineering has something wrong with them.

Sorry dUdE, I'm a software engineer and the last thing I'd want to do is work for free. I'm sorry, but I find these "open source" nirvana arguments as laughable the dreams of a socialist-eutopia became in the 20th century.

Any company that chooses .net over other alternatives will get what they deserve. That will be a high cost in the future in the form of never ending payments to Microsoft.

Microsoft has demonstrated time and again that the customer comes second to Microsoft revenue.

A company IT manager should be fired for even recommending a commital to .net without any knowledge of Microsoft's future pricing policies, commitment requirements and security policies.

These same companies will also be helping MS in their attempt to completly control internet standards. Control of standards by Microsoft will stifle competition and further ensure the company's future cost will be high.

I used to think Open Source was the wave of the future. But then I did the math.

Microsoft and their "upgrade treadmill" actually end up giving more bang for the buck than Open Source. This seems counterintuitive, but keep in mind that you're buying the work of professional programmers when you use Microsoft solutions. With Open Source, you have to hire an analyst and a programming team to maintain your code, which will almost inevitably have to be forked so that your programmers can make it stable.

I don't know about you, but I don't know many businesses that can afford a team of programmers to keep their word processor running. So please, don't fall for the myths you'll hear about how cheap it is. You get what you pay for.
