Palladium's Power To Deny

BrianWCarver writes "The Chronicle of Higher Education has the most detailed article I've yet seen on Microsoft's Palladium architecture. The article discusses the potential Palladium has to give publishers power to eliminate fair use and the potential for software manufacturers to use Palladium to enforce shrink-wrap licenses. Comments from several great sources including, Ed Felten (Freedom to Tinker), Eben Moglen (pro-bono counsel for the Free Software Foundation and recent Slashdot interviewee), and Seth Schoen (Electronic Frontier Foundation) among many others. Key quotations from article: Palladium could create 'a closed system, in which each piece of knowledge in the world is identified with a particular owner, and that owner has a right to resist its copying, modification, and redistribution. In such a scenario the very concept of fair use has been lost.' 'Palladium will "turn the clock back" to the days before online information was widely available.' and 'Microsoft could decide to lock everything up.'"

It is official; His doctor has confirmed: CowboyNeal is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleagured CowboyNeal community when the USDA confirmed that CowboyNeal's waist line has jumped yet again, now up to over 12 light-years. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that CowboyNeal has been bitch-slapped by 4.2 million women, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Cowboyneal is collapsing as a black hole, as fittingly exemplified by Getting anal-raped by the Goatse Guy last week.

You don't need to be a doctor to predict CowboyNeal's future. The hand writing is on the wall: CowboyNeal faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for CowboyNeal because CowboyNeal is dying. Things are looking very bad for CowboyNeal. As many of us are already aware, CowboyNeal continues to have heart attacks every day. A river of blood flows out of his ass.

CowboyNeal is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of his organs. The sudden and unpleasant anal rape of CowboyNeal can only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: CowboyNeal is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

CowboyNeal doctor Theo states that there are 7000 pounds of CowboyNeal. How many pounds of CowboyNeal would it take to feed an army? Let's see. The number of CowboyNeal versus Army Reserve posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 pounds of CowboyNeal per soldier. A recent article put CowboyNeal's artery blockage at about 80%. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 seconds left for CowboyNeal to live. This is consistent with the number of CowboyNeal Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Slashdot, abysmal business plan, and so on, CowboyNeal went bankrupt and was taken over by the SPECTRE who also have a stupid business plan. Now SPECTRE is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another weapons dealer.

All major surveys show that CowboyNeal has steadily declined in life expectancy. Cowboyneal is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If CowboyNeal is to survive at all it will be by starving himself for 6 months and living in a health club. CowboyNeal's arteries continue to clog. Nothing short of a quadruple bypass could save him at this point in time. For all practical purposes, CowboyNeal is dead.

    Fact: CowboyNeal is dying

I am utterly sick of new security features in everything computer related. Every time we get more "security" rammed down our throats there's always somthing tagged along with it, some new way to slowly convice us to give up our rights.
I use no antivirus bs and never update windows (God knows I dont wanna read the EULA's) because one of these days they are bound to have some clause in there about MS getting yer soul in return for "security" "updates". I need no security.... Use yer friggin brain and you dont get viruses.... My router + my brain = not one virus ever on any of my computers. People need to learn about computers; they need to realize what personal rights they are blindly giving away for "security" that they don't need.

Well, perhaps they are just more concerned about the potential loss of life, than some computing thing that they've never heard of?

Off-topic, but my karma can take the hit.

Ironically, the anti-war protesters this weekend have actually made war MORE probable and probably cost many lives. They went out there, looked like 1960's peaceniks, and the next day Saddam transmitted that on Iraqi TV and said that it showed the world united against America, yadda yadda yadda. So now Iraqis (may) be more inclined to think their leader is innocent. They may be more inclined to fight to the death because they think their cause is just. Saddam himself may think that all that public opinion in his favor is going to protect him. And what you have is an emboldened Iraq that is more likely to resist and draw this out, leading to war. Thanks, Peaceniks, what a great job you did this weekend.

If the peaceniks wanted to help they should have gone to the streets protesting: "Saddam, cooperate NOW to avoid war!" THAT makes sense. THAT'S what peace-hugging France is even saying. That would convey that the peaceniks are against war but the burden is placed on Iraq to avoid it.

I'm not pro-war. But I'm 100% anti-peaceniks. They have the right to protest, of course. But it is sad that those who do so truly don't realize the consequences of their actions and don't realize that their actions probably emboldened the target and will end up costing lives on both sides.

    Oh well.

I'm an american. I'm a male. I'm 20 years old. There is a bill being considered to enact something very much like the draft (it's actually more scary than the old draft.) If we go to war the military is going to try to send me to war. War has ruined the lives of thousands of veterans (including two I have met personally.) I do not want my life destoryed, much less ended, so that some rich asshole can make more money (After all that's what this war is about.) Gee why does war with Iraq concern me more than my ability to download music and use software as I please?

If you must know I'm protesting against more than just war (it is possible to stand for more than one thing.) I have written my representatives about the war, the patriot act, the extension of the patriot act, INS profiling, big business, corruption in the government, etc, etc. As well as signed multiple petitions protesting Palladium.

I suggest you do the same.
