Pointless IT Innovations Considered Harmful

Makarand writes "According to a comment column in the guardian innovations in IT are most often simply more trouble than they are worth. Most innovations in IT today are platform specific and are easy to come up with in the computing fields. Innovating gets easier if the platform sticks around for a long time. These innovations accrue incompatibilities making it difficult for users to switch platforms and absorb the costs of switching to a new platform. Users will not switch to a competitor's product if they believe that their platform will be later updated to deliver the same benefits."

In the past I have repeatedly questioned the supposed higher salaries of Unix and Linux Admins. Here is a new job posting from the infamous city of largo.

TECHNOLOGY MANAGER (J-17)$38,334 starting salary. Associate's Degree in Computer Science or computer related field. business/Public Administrator, or Criminal Justice; two years police related technology experience two years UNIX-AX, INFORMIX, and Thin Client and local area networks beneficial. Send resume to: City of Largo, Human Resources, P.O. Box 296, Largo, FL 33779-0296; Internet (Plain text only): resumelargo.com .; Fax: (727) 587-6782. CLOSING DATE: Open Until Filled EOE/M/F/V-VP-Smoke Free/Drug Free Workplace

Now granted, this is a low-level position despite the job title of, Techanology Manager. But, in Largo MCSEs get more than this.

Still more than I make, but not by enough to warrant the extra job requirements (2 years police related tech experience? two years informix?). Odd that local area network experience is considered "beneficial" and not "if you don't have it you're probably lying about your Unix experience".

Once again, breaking news from a non-U.S. source:

U.S. Dirty Tricks At The U.N.

Combined with the daily changes in the
    U.S. positions (Powell's statement on
French radio that the U.S. will pursue
    peaceful resolution (?-very consistent
with the ranting of Rumsfeld, Bush, and
the rest of the psychopaths), the above
news will finally turn the tide totally
    against the U.S. position.

George W. Bush can kiss the 2004
