Clay Shirky has a good essay on wireless networking, contrasting two approaches to building out a network, roughly akin to the cathedral and bazaar methods of building software.

    Having used wireless for 4 years or so because
    i am in the boonies, i can wireless sucks. Weather
    does effect your connections, no matter what they
    say. And they don't like to roll out the trucks
    when there's a problem. Stick to the umbilical
    cord.
