Susan Kare: Mother of Icons You Love (or Hate)

More than just icons, her GUI elements have become part of the modern collective subconscious - trashcans, bombs, and Happy Macs are universally recognized by computer literate persons the world over. (I can personally attest that the Mac System 6 beachball is burned into my soul...) She deserves some recognition of her own."

    Does anyone know that song I keep hearing on the radio which I believe is titled "Very Special"? It is a hit and I would like to download it for my personal use. I am having trouble finding out the artist name. Does anyone know it? If you could reply to this with the artist name and the proper song title if I am incorrect, I would be forever in your debt. Thank you.

    I believe it is one of those African-American fellows, if that helps. He is crooning about his very special girl and how she is a beauty.

      No no, that's not it. The negro that sang this song was the refined type - not the filthy, uneducated swine you cite. While the boo I am seeking to locate still suffers from certain racial limitations, he is much like a gentleman in his own particular negroid manner. He's proof positive that blacks aren't just on my continent to fuel the watermelon and fried chicken markets.

      they've been talking about it all afternoon on foxnews. terrible, terrible incident. the marines involved should be punished and an effective protocol for dealing with suspected "suicide bombing" risks (that's why the shooting occurred -- the car the women were in refused to stop at a checkpoint) must be devised. fyi i'm still in favor of the military action in iraq.

      Guess what, don't stop at a military checkpoint, you deserve to get your ass waxed.

      Dad (WWII) vet and I were laughing about this on Saturday - I asked him if he was ever told that he had to fire a warning shot is someone didn't follow instructions at a checkpoint. He said "No, you just shot them" After a couple of weeks folks learn not to disobay at checkpoints

      Assassin: One who murders by surprise attack, especially one who carries out a plot to kill a prominent person.

      These people were hardly assassinated. If you don't stop at military checkpoints, they WILL shoot you. It's that simple. In fact, if you pose a potential threat and don't follow orders that you are given, then you get shot.

      Similar things happened when we were fighting in Vietnam. Children would run out to hug the soldiers. Unfortunately, some of the children had live grenades that they would use to kill them. Our troops started gunning down anyone running towards them in self-defense.

    ok, this is offtopic and I'm probably going to get flamed, but I really wanted to post something interesting here - my original submission to Slashdot got rejected (how this minimalist icon piece of rubbish got accepted instead I do not know...).

    Today, Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings fame - the slashdot editors don't seem to have heard of him) announced that he *will* be filming a remake of KING KONG, in New Zealand. Details are at
