Yuri's Night World Space Party 2003 - 04.12.03

kulakovich writes "This Saturday is the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's orbit of Earth. The site yurisnight.net is organizing the festivities. There are currently 60+ parties scheduled around the world in 34 countries to celebrate, and the event has been featured in the March WIRED April Events Calendar. I heard about it through the Extropians list . Isn't it nice for our species to have something to celebrate that is positive for a change?"

This Saturday is the 42nd anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's 1961 orbit of Earth.

Struck me as odd that that was left out. An anniversary is the celebration of a specific date is it not?

This is cool. If all these people around the world can celebrate a 42 year old achievement, maybe we will have another amazing space accomplishment or 2 to celebrate in the near future. This kind of thing shows there is very significant worldwide support for space exploration. Go humanity go!

That struck me as odd too. Does that mean we get to do it again next year? ;-)

It will be 40 years (on June 16th) since Valentina Tereshkova orbited earth 48 times. Valentina was the first woman in space, not Sally Ride as I was taught in school; my teachers conveniently left out her full title as first american woman in space. That however is still a 20 year anniversary in June this year, also.
