OpenBSD 3.3 Song

flynn_nrg writes "Even although version 3.3 is not out yet, users can already enjoy the new 3.3 song: "Puff the Barbarian". Like other Barbarians before him, Puff has had to face some pretty crazy challenges. This song is an allegory of the recent difficulties we went through dealing with Sun, who refused our request for documentation about their UltraSPARC III processors. We want documentation, because these are the fastest processors with a per-page eXecute bit in the MMU, needed to fully support our new W^X security feature. In the meantime, the AMD Hammer has come onto the scene, and this processor supports an eXecute bit in 64-bit mode. And it is going to be faster... Both mp3 and ogg versions available."

    At the tower Puff appealed
For the wisdom of the One
    Denied, his mind did reel
Puff was getting tired of Sun

    Broke down the guard
    Cause math is hard
    Found McNealy on his throne
    All alone and only bones

Come the Sun King blade ablur
    Hammer down eclipse the Sun
    And Puff, the land secured
    The new King Barbarian!

We already know that Hammer will wipe Sun off the map, oh wait, I forgot that Sun's messaging software will save the day. heh Probably just like their Linux distro showed the world how hip they could be to open source.

  3. Doesn't work on Windows. by Daphnee+Ewald · · Score: 3, Funny

I tried playing the download on my Windows XP machine, but every time I do I get this screen going flashing by saying something about "free software related file identified -- launching propaganda" and it starts playing some .NET advertizement instead.

  4. No ID3 tags by Yonder+Way · · Score: 3, Funny

Anyone else find it annoying that the OpenBSD songs don't have ID3 tags giving proper attribution?

I thought the whole point of using a BSD license over public domain was that BSD license gives credit.

    1. Re:No ID3 tags by Yonder+Way · · Score: 4, Insightful

Well when the file is copied and redistributed, there is no credit given to the musicians or to the OpenBSD project itself. It seems pretty pointless and lazy to not spend the 1 minute to fill in the ID3 tags before distributing the MP3's.

I really really liked their 3.0 and 3.1 release songs. Systemagic and E-Railed. They're on the same page as the 3.3. What awesome promo for their most righteous OS. GG guys!

  6. Already on /. by mirabilos · · Score: 3, Informative

I think it's pretty pointless that this is already
on slashdot. Please give the mirrors time to update,
    and get the songs afterwards.

    $ cvs -qd mirbsd-cvs@bsdadvocacy.org:/cvs co -PA src/share/misc/contrib

will get you all of the songs 3.0 - 3.3 in the MP3
versions, with lyrics. And I uploaded that back over
    my 16K link.
