Advent Rising Announced

Phy writes "3DGPU reports a story from Blues News today that Majesco has officially announced Advent Rising, a third-person action/adventure game trilogy developed on the Unreal engine for PC and Xbox created in collaboration with famed sci-fi author Orson Scott Card. The Advent Rising website is now online. The site has a place to register, a copy of the formal press announcement, and a couple of wallpapers." I admit I don't usually read books that I don't have to, but I've read a couple of Card's books and enjoyed them. Here's hoping his talents translate well to pixels.

Looks pretty likely to be another generic FPS to me, given that it's built around the Unreal engine, and its story about a human with "incredible powers that lay dormant within him" sounds remarkably clichéd, even for a press release.

This joins Majesco Games wonderfully original lineup, featuring amongst other titles, a new version of Bomberman, and a race game featuring "futuristic, anti-gravitational vehicles" - sound like Wipeout to anyone?

The site seems to be heavy on buzz but light on content - for the moment, I wouldn't waste your time.

I know for a fact that Mr. Card worked on the story for LucasArts The Dig.

According to Moby Games, he also worked on some other games, but I don't know how accurate that information is.

There doesn't seem to be much out there in terms of unique descriptions about Advent Rising or media presenting the game itself. It's an Unreal game but what I'd really be interested in would be seeing some of the Doom3 engine games.

This is the same publisher that put out the awful Soldier of Fortune port for the PS2? The butchered Earthworm Jim 2 for the GBA?

And who is GlyphX, the developer? What have they done before?

And this is the same Card that wrote the brilliant Ender's Game but the less-than-brilliant sequels?

Sorry, but it's going to take more than those names to make me interested in a game.

Do I buy a copy of XP, or do I buy an Xbox? I tend to stick to games I can play on Linux or my PS2... Considering I despise Microsoft, on both technical and moral grounds, which way would be the least... "evil" way to go?

I suppose I also have to consider that I hate to reboot...

Perhaps I should wait to see if the game is any good or not :)

Hmmm... The Xbox is actually cheaper than buying XP...

    Anyone have any other pros/cons?
