Want Anime Network on Your Cable System?

ccnull writes "The Anime Network has launched a "tell your cable company to carry this station!" campaign on its web site. Just enter your ZIP code at the top of the site's home page (it looks like a banner ad) and you'll be that much closer to Samurai X 24/7. In case you hadn't heard, the network launched in late 2002." No support via DirecTV. I filled out the form already- I crave this channel.

Too bad they're limiting what they show to those properties they own the rights to. Or at least, that's what I thought I read somewhere recently. And that would also explain why their offerings are somewhat limited.

I would have rather Turner had spun off all of their anime and "edgey" shows into a Toonami network. It could have been a nice mix of stuff like the Adult Swim line up with hardcore anime shows mixed in. Anime is good, if taken in moderation.

I dispise what Walt Disney did for the state of animation in America. Before Disney came to dominate the American animation scene there was animation aimed at all age groups (Betty Boop anyone?). Fortunately, this never happened in Japan. Japanesse animation, Anime, repersents a wide variety of Genres everything from Hamtaro and Pokemon to gothic horror such as Vampire Hunter D to historical documents such as Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen to pornography such as Legend of the Overfiend. While you may be a member of Mensa (another discussion), your catagorization of Anime as childish TV comics shows your ignorance. The subject material in Anime is easily as deep as Holywood movies.

On a related subject, good children's programming actually works on two levels. There is a surface layer which appeals to the children, and there is a deeper level which serves to entertain the parents. The best examples of this are the 1960's Batman series (kids love the superheroes, parents laugh), Rugrats (kids identify with the Rugrats, parents get to identify with and laugh at the older people), and Spongebob Squarepants (which works on many levels).

Nah. One of the best things about something like an Anime club/channel is the fact that you're exposed to something ELSE besides Akira or Speedracer.

The problem is whether or not genre foo has quality content that is not overhyped yet is worth watching.

The only thing which might save the Anime channel from the doom faced by Themed movie channels is the same things that have saved Turner Classic Movies and American Movie Classics (themed movie channels). The corporation running the channel will also own the copyrights to the content. Therefore it won't cost them extra money to run the good stuff. Of course, not all Anime is owned by one corporation. The two big features that will definitely be missing are "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away" which are both controled by Disney in the USA.

Related: I think that Disney is trying to intentionally kill the US Anime market. They have purchased two of the biggest Anime movies and then promoted them horrably. For example, Princess Mononoke previews aired before a Winnie the Poo movie. When I saw it, there were 12 20-50 something anime fans and about 50 mother's with young children in the theater. After the first decapitation, there were 50 fewer people in the movie.

But is it Edited/Censored? If it is, then it's no better than what Cartoon Network does and I don't want it.

Of all the topics on Slashdot, anime seems to get the worst rap. The most common diss is that it's a "crappy cartoon". This is as unreasonable as saying "Windows is a stable OS"

Anime is more than just a crappy cartoon. You want a crappy cartoon, watch the disney channel sometime in the afternoon. Yes, some anime is bad, in fact, a lot of it is. Come to think of it, there are lots of crappy TV shows (reality tv anyone?) and crappy movies (fast and furious anyone?). With any genre, there comes the good and the bad.

One of the best anime review sites on the web If you take a look at rankings of most anime shown on american tv (cartoon network, most notably), you will notice that MOST of them are only in the 50 - 80 % range. The anime shown during the "adult swim" of cartoon network have a much higher average. I'll bet most of you anime dissers are judging the whole of a genre based on the anime with the lowest averages **cough**Dragonball Z**cough**.

It'd be like me saying that all sci-fi movies are as bad as "This Island Earth".(Neglecting the fact that it is SO bad that it's funny)

Broaden your spectrum, all ye naysayers. Either that, or stop posting under the anime topics. You're ruining it for those of us with an appreciation for the art.

(And I would request the channel, but I'm stuck on DirecTV)
(Yes, I would rather have subs. But dubs will do till they realize that I'd pay more for subs)

Depends. You've never seen captions that don't exactly match the speech? I have all the time. Not just live broadcasts where they're making typos or the voice recognition is going insane, though that's fun to watch too. =)

Besides, like that's WORSE than the actual dub itself? Half the problem is the dub actors either don't take the role seriously or overdo it because they're crap. That goes away in plain text. :P
