OpenBSD 3.3 Released
An anonymous reader writes "OpenBSD 3.3 was released today, with many new features, including integration of the ProPolice stack protection technology, W^X ('write xor X') on sparc, alpha and hppa, privilege separated XFree86 and an incredible number of enhancements and stability improvements to the packet filter, pf, including address pools for reverse NAT/load balancing, ALTQ integration for network conditioning, and anchors/tables/spamd for spam tar-pitting. Information on the release can be found here and download sites are listed here. (Also, here's a handy way to speed up your DSL connection - prioritizing empty TCP ACKs and ToS low-delay traffic with OpenBSD 3.3's pf.)"
Does anybody know if NetBSD has been ported to this yet?
I just bought a TiBook with the flamboyant OS X operating system.
Does this make me a homosexual?
3.3 is their swan song....
;-)
The core team will call it quits any day(much like the dem. party)
dead by 3.4, NO QUESTION
The next Slashdot story will be ready soon, but subscribers can beat the rush and see it early!
That's just gay. Totally, completely, 100% gay.
Does it run teh Loonix?
This obviously never occured; everyone knows BSD is dying. Therefore, a new release certainly could never have occurred. It's been dying for years, after all.
I bet it would really fly then.
The reason OpenBSD sucks is purely political. Theo is a fucking retard.
One more crippling
bombshell hit the already beleaguered *BSD community when IDC confirmed that *BSD
market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of
all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states
that *BSD has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've
known all along. *BSD is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by
failing dead last [samag.com]
in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.
You don't need to
be a Kreskin [amazingkreskin.com] to predict *BSD's
future. The hand writing is on the wall: *BSD faces a bleak future. In fact there won't
be any future at all for *BSD because *BSD is dying. Things are looking very
bad for *BSD. As many of us are already aware, *BSD continues to lose market share. Red
ink flows like a river of blood.
FreeBSD is the most endangered of them all, having
lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time
FreeBSD developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point
more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: FreeBSD is dying.
Let's
keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
OpenBSD leader Theo states that there
are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of
OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are
about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume
of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put
FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the *BSD market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 =
36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeBSD went out
of business and was taken over by BSDI who sell another troubled OS. Now BSDI
is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major
surveys show that *BSD has steadily declined in market share. *BSD is very sick and
its long term survival prospects are very dim. If *BSD is to survive at all it will
be among OS dilettante dabblers. *BSD continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle
could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, *BSD is dead.

just use linux
Theo has no SMP Theo's OS is fault and error prone
Theo rips off stuff from FreeBSD
even NetBSD, which OpenBSD forked from has SMP
this code is not more secure, less people use it so the claim is never challenged.
this code is slow
there is no SMP, ill say it again, because that is harder than "auditing" 3 year old NetBSD code
SSH is the only good thing from this project
morons use this software.
the funding for this project was pulled early because Theo is a retard, and says retarded things, and then the little fucker from Canada whines to the ACLU because he shit on the people who funded him and they retaliated.
there isn't anything left the is unique to OpenBSD. anyone working on this project who is any good contributes to the other BSDs because no one uses this shit.
this BSD is prone to kernel livelock from promiscuous ingress traffic.
this is a low performance OS, for low performance hardware, from a career academic person with an asshole personality..
I'm not fan of linux, and a lover of FreeBSD, but I think id rather use linux than this crap; this stuff is real, genuine, crap.
and don't give me one fuckin work about this being a networking OS, its FUCKING BULLSHIT. Check out a juniper m160 running a modified version of FreeBSD, or an F5 BigIP machine, then call up Juniper and F5 and tell them they are stupid for using FreeBSD and need to switch to OpenBSD. Then listen to laughter on the telephone, at your expense.
Never has an OS had such a group of poor, sexless, fat live with parents losers who are fucking obsessed with obsolete slow shitty hardware than does OpenBSD and that FUCKING BlowFish and the FUCKING gay songs.
FUCK YOU THEO, fuck you.
Also, good luck getting a JDK/JRE to run here. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Fuckers.
u said windows supports it, this isnt windows its linux :)
Linux is amateur software development on crack - trying to be a lot of things to a lot of people. It has to be buzzword compliant for corporate customers, people use it to "stick it to Microsoft", then reboot into Windows to actually do some work.
The BSD's take a more professional, laid-back approach. Those that code for it tend to be there to solve a problem - they take more time and care to solve it right (or nearly right) on the first try.
A generalisation perhaps, but I've found it to be mostly true. Linux has the flash, the BSDs are more secure. It's difficult to have both.
OpenBSD in particular tends to be the most secure, but code is occasionally shared between the NetBSD, OpenBSD and FreeBSD variants. As was mentioned in that FreeBSD interview the other day - often separate implementation ideas are tried out in all three, whichever solution works best ends up getting used by all.
Grant money is great, eh?
Love,
An unbuilt cruise missle.
bullshit. total bullshit. microsoft has and will continue to take things from freebsd, but openbsd to the trained eye is SHIT.
you are so full of noob anectdotal shit its unreal. btw, F5 BigIP and Juniper already use FreeBSD on heavy iron, but you wouldnt know anything about networking or much about anything in general, so i dont expect you to know what an M160 is.

its not a desktpo at - it sucks royall as one.
it is trivial to live lock and for such a badass networking OS there isnt even a way to control ingress with device polling.
its a piece of shit, and anyone doing anything on OpenBSD if sane would have moved to freebsd.
your redhat box got owned because YOUR are the stupid fuck, and dont know how to use netstat and lsof or some shit. and secure by default is such bull. by default it doesnt do fucking anything, ass.

I don't want knowledge. I want certainty. - Law, David Bowie
butt kissing asslicking karma fucking whore.
you should put a rating for how gay and shitty the songs are, like on a fucking scale from -1 to -10
