Projector Torture Test: LCD versus DLP

An anonymous reader writes "A ten month torture test of five LCD and two DLP projectors shows LCD images deteriorate during extended use." Not surprisingly, if you run an LCD projector for 4000 hours, it deteriorates... of course, if you're staring at a projecter 8 hours a day, for 500 straight days, maybe you should go outside ;)

My company has a theater with an LCD projector running 10 hours a day. It's been a year and a half, and it looks pretty bad - the whole picture has a hazy blue tint. Now that I read about this, it's time to get warranty service - and maybe work in some cooling cycles.

I have seen a couple of projectors (likewise running 10 hours/day) that had spots on one or two of their three LCD panels, but (a) they were very old, and (b) they were thermally abused - kept in underventilated cabinets and shut off with the lamp on.
