SCO Claims Kernel Contains UnixWare Code
ergo98 writes "SCO has increased the intensity of the lawsuit with IBM by claiming to hold indisputable proof that copyrighted UnixWare code found its way into Linux, violating the rules of both camps. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen: SCO refuses to divulge the code in question, however they promise to reveal it in court shortly."
"The Linux community would have me publish it now, (so they can have it) laundered by the time we can get to a court hearing"
That they would.
This shows one of the weaknesses of the open-source movement," said Mark Radcliffe, a copyright attorney with Gray Cary. "You're all dependent on trust. Unfortunately, a number of people involved in the process do not have a great degree of respect for intellectual property. It's fine if it's personal, but if you decide to implement that by saying 'I don't give a damn about this intellectual property,' everything that touches it is now screwed."
Seriously, open source software projects are, by and large, copylefted clones of commercial products. Am I the only one who saw something like this happening eventually?
You can point and fuss and cuss at SCO all you want. This is no doubt just the tip of the iceberg.
I'm sure there are hundreds of others who've had their code "liberated" without their consent.
I don't need no instructions to know how to rock!!!!
Ironically, the very attributes and design goals that made Unix a success
when computers were much smaller, and were expected to do far less, now
impede its utility and usability. Each graft of a new subsystem onto the
underlying core has resulted in either rejection or graft vs. host disease with
its concomitant proliferation of incapacitating scar tissue. The Unix net-working
model is a cacophonous Babel of Unreliability that quadrupled the
size of Unix's famed compact kernel. Its window system inherited the
cryptic unfriendliness of its character-based interface, while at the same
time realized new ways to bring fast computers to a crawl. Its new system
administration tools take more time to use than they save. Its mailer makes
the U.S. Postal Service look positively stellar.
The passing years only magnify the flaws. Using Unix remains an unpleas-ant
experience for beginners and experts alike. Despite a plethora of fine
books on the subject, Unix security remains an elusive goal at best. Despite
increasingly fast, intelligent peripherals, high-performance asynchronous I/
O is a pipe dream. Even though manufacturers spend millions developing
"easy-to-use" graphical user interfaces, few versions of Unix allow you to
do anything but trivial system administration without having to resort to
the 1970s-style teletype interface. Indeed, as Unix is pushed to be more and
more, it instead becomes less and less. Unix cannot be fixed from the
inside. It must be discarded.
to just shut the FUCK up. Where is the PROOF? If linux has their source-code, where is it?
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror / Sci Fi writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.

That's complete FUD. Why would SCO cause themselves more difficulty by using a legal strategy that ultimately would cause them more harm then good? Most likely they have proof, or they wouldn't have said anything. Given the loose nature of linux coding, I'm not surprised at all that someone with access to SCO code would contribute it to Linux. Hell, Stallman believes all code should be free. Why wouldn't one of his followers steal code given that philosophy?

Does anyone know how many families are being destroyed by the internets extreme of child erotica, modelling. porn whatever you want to call it? It's like booze to the sex drive of so many men. The bottle shops right in their private room. My story has been secret because I just didn't know what to think. The opinions of people coming forward now, justify my gut feeling of how WRONG any form of child sexualization is. My husband 43, started with playboy, ok, then sex pictures online when computors became available, ok. Then I discovered whole library collections of thousands of child erotica photo's with children 7-12 years clothed and unclothed. oh, their legal paysites - NOT OK>
I will never understand the desire. It's private for him. I am now locked out of his computor. I feel he will never act of his thoughts. What do we have thought police now? I will never have children with him. If the internet was not there as a tool for him to explore child erotica, he would never publically express or seek knowledge. Simply because child erotica isn't that easy to find anywhere else. This has destroyed a huge part of my thoughts on marriage, life and the mind's of a huge MAJORITY of mankind. Take that!!!
Too bad it's dying.
It hurts when I pee.
What do you propose "we" "do" about it? Or are you just karma whoring by using the tried and tested "let's give this story a Microsoft angle"?
Well, I actually hope SCO wins and destroys Linux. How is that for a difference of opinion? I can think of nothing that would make me happier than to learn that the uppity uber geeks of linux had blatantly stolen code from a stodgy old company like SCO. Yes, I now officially hate Linux. It is has burned me, let me down, and wasted my time. I hate it most of all because my previous ability to shun windows ( because I hate it too ) has dissolved into the realization that Linux is never going to be a better overall solution. So back to Windows I go, longing for BeOS the whole fucking time. Fuck Linux.
