NYC: Leverage Fiber, Offer Free Wi-Fi

gpmap writes "A new study from the New York City Council is recommending that the Big Apple throw open the competitive bidding process for its annual $130 million phone and Internet bill in order to leverage one of the most expansive -- and underused -- fiber optic networks in the country. In so doing, New York City could not only cut its annual telecom bill, but would also be in a position to deploy wireless networking links as the "last mile" connecting metropolitan area networks, or MANs. In addition, it suggested using the fiber to deploy free Internet access with a Wi-Fi Network in Brooklyn's Prospect Park."

Every nyc employee/agency and every nyc school should be switched to gnu/linux. Even if nyc has one of the most favorable microsoft contracts, the switch should happen.

NYC agencies and schools are in the stone age when it comes to computing. And the microsoft disease will keep nyc school children computing illiterate, and will keep microsoft feeding at the taxpayer trough, and nyc council members feeding at the contribution trough

Any reporter want to do some investigative reporting out there? Ask a contractor if they've ever heard a nyc agency official tell his secretary, in the contractor's presence, that the contractor would be dropping off a $1,000 contribution to a certain favored legislator when the contractor comes to pick up the final payment on his publicly bidded contract. With the contractor not knowing anything about this in advance.

That's how its done folks. It comes as shocking news to the contractor, and the contractor doesn't peep a word, or he can kiss any future winning bids goodbye. You see, even though a contractor may have a winning bid, the agencies are allowed to go to the next higher bidders if they feel that the next higher bidders are better/better equipped/didn't underbid/better experience/bigger contributions/whatever.
