Simulation Of An Asteroid Impact In The Year 2880
JoeRobe writes "Researchers at UCSC have simulated a possible outcome of an impact by asteroid 1950DA when it passes near us in the year 2880. Note that there is a 0.3% chance of impact during that encounter. In the event that it impacts in the Atlantic, they predict that the '60,000 megaton blast' would create 400 foot waves along the east coast. In addition to an assessment of the danger, their studies point out the resulting geologic features that we should be looking for now, which would indicate where and when such impacts have occured in the past."
The bible is not something to ridiculize IMHO. I know many people laugh at Christians because they believe that God created earth in 6 days and not millions of years. Unfortunately most Christaians do not realize that 6 days for God can mean millions of years or fractions of seconds (God is omnipresent, etc, etc.. read you bible and you might also believe in this). The Bible is not easy to understand. Thera are many things that are not completely explained (God has a reason for that, it stated in the book of Numbers or Deutronomy, IIRC). For example lets look at Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Would it be easier to believe if it read something like this:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And the light was of fusion, made of gamma rays which went forth when two hydrogen nulei combined to form helium, producing abundant force and warmth, and the force sent the heavens on their way. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness according to the earth's rotation And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
It is very unfortunate that even when the bible itself does not excludes many of what has been found using science, people do exludes it because it comes from a scientist. And also so sad that many scientist having all the evidence in their hands do not want to accept there is a God. Of course, this is only my opinion and belief.
Considering the the Bush Administration's current environmental policies will render the planet uninhabitable within the next 2 decades, i think any disaster a few centuries from now shouls only cause concern for some sturdy strains of nematodes, viruses and prions...
Because you went to a crap school?
