Mount Remote Filesystems via SSH

eval writes "Ever wanted secure access to your files at work or school, but didn't have the necessary permissions or were thwarted by a firewall that allowed ssh access only? The SHFS kernel module allows you to mount directories from machines to which you have shell access. File operations are executed as shell commands on the server via SSH (or rsh). Caching keeps it reasonably fast, and remote commands are optimized based on the server's OS."

There are several systems that will allow this functionality already; one of the more notable is CONESE CONtrol of Encrypted Secure Enterprises.

CODA or NFS even solve everything that you might want to do with filesystems. NFS is by no means solid but it does keep working through things like network outages. You can reboot an NFS server while a file write is taking place. The app will just sit there until the server comes back up, finish the write and carry on as before. CODA, which is getting stable now does some really advanced stuff, like disconnected operation.

While a bit long in the tooth, CONESE was an experimental acadenic file system from back when they were cool. (I think it was devised by a guy named Conese at the University of Naples.) It was written for 2.0, but someone ported it to the 2.2 series, but it has long been abandoned and I don't think it compiles under 2.4.

So, is there any way to get to access to linux directories in winxp other then SMB? I take it that this story is for linux linux only stuff.

I know it gets asked a lot but I run into all kinds of random linux / networking questions from time to time and I just have no good place to discuss it. Where can I find such a haven.

No, I'm not the real Donald Knuth. Though it amazes me how absolutely gullible most of slashdot really is.

Anyway, I trolled once, with a absolutely insane premise - that I was actually his holiness Donald Knuth, and had graduate students stooping to the level of hacking on fvwm. That post remained at '+5 Insightful' for several hours. I was going for funny, but the slashdot moderators proved once again that I too often overestimate their collective intelligence.

Oh well. It's an internet message board, not to be confused with anything meaningful. Have a cookie.
