Slashback: NIC, Dastar, Defects

Slashback tonight with a round of corrections and updates to recent (and not recent) Slashdot postings. Read on to find out more on the fate of Larry Ellison's thin-client Linux machine, OpenTV vs. GNU, getting satisfaction instead of defective hard drives, and more. Enjoy!

Was it ahead of its time or vice versa? BreadMan writes "After limping along for years, the New Internet Computer (NIC) company finally went under. Founded by Larry Ellison, NIC sold a diskless workstation running Linux targeted at home users that wanted internet access. From the spec sheet it looks like this would be fun as a hacking platform if you can get one on the cheap."

Way to GNU! xarium writes "Seems that in response to pressure from the FSF OpenTV has released the source code to all of its compilers. You can download the full package here (~18meg)."

Because a hard drive should not be a rhythm section. Dynamoo writes "As previously noted in Slashdot, Fujitsu MPG3xx series hard drives have been failing in huge numbers. The U.S. law firm, Shepherd Finkelman Miller & Shah is currently conducting a class action against Fujitsu and HP for knowingly distributing faulty drives. According the this article in The Register, Gateway has now been lined up as a defendant.

The fault appears to impact MPG3102AT, MPG3204AT, MPG3307AT and MPG3409AT units manufactured in early 2001. If you have one of these, then it has probably failed already, if not you should replace it asap. If you're a customer of HP/Compaq you can visit the HP Hard Disk Drive Replacement Program site.
We had about 40 of these things fitted to Compaq DeskPro EXDs, and I can assure you the failure rate is pushing 100%."

In the public domain, no one knows you're a dog. smiff writes "United Press International reports on Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox. Reversing lower court rulings, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Dastar did not violate the origin-of-work provision of the Lanham act. Dastar had taken public domain video, made some modifications, and sold it as its own product. Twentieth Century Fox sued claiming they should have been given credit for the video. According to Antonin Scalia, Dastar would have violated the Lanham Act if it had simply repacked the material and sold it as its own. But since Dastar made some minor changes, the Lanham Act doesn't apply.

While Dastar has been cleared under the Lanham Act, the Supreme Court sent the case back for a rehearing. The Fox video entered the public domain in 1977, but the book it was based on is still protected by copyright."

... or get off the pot. Brazilian Joe writes "The LinuxTag folks, as you may know, are responsible for a restraining order against SCO's claims in Germany. As a result, SCO has shut down its Germany web site. Story here."

    I loved my Mom.

I mean, I really loved my Mom.

Since a couple of months after my Father passed away, I have been the man of the family. I could see the frustration and tension in her face as she worked tirelessly to ease the pain of her loss. One night, I saw her crying and went to her. I placed my hands on her shoulders and began rubbing her shoulders and neck. She turned around, placed her hands on mine and lowered them to her breasts. The look of amazement and shock must have surprised her. She moved forward and moved her left arm around my neck as she used her right arm to reach down and grab at my growing groin. As she held my neck in her hand, she pulled my face to hers and buried her tongue in my mouth. That was how it all began.

Now she is gone also. I reach down into her casket and stroke her face. Her face is cold and unresponsive. Her desires are at rest now. My hand touches her lips. The lips that I once kissed are like stone. My hand wanders lower and I brush her right nipple. No movements, no catching of her breath. My hand lowers to her pubic mound. I fondle her through her death garment. These lips are unresponsive also. A tear breaks through and falls down my cheek.

"What are you doing?" I hear behind me as I am jerked back to reality. Turning around, Aunt Jane is standing in the door. Her hands are on her hips as she stares at me, almost through me.

"I...I was just remembering Mom." I stammered unsure of what to say or expect. Embarrassed, I walk past her and out of the funeral home. I get in my car and breathe a big sigh, both at what I just experienced and the end of my loving relationship with Mom.

I get home and collapse in the recliner. Family is all around talking about anything that they can think of and anything they can get someone to listen to. It all seems so distant as I fall back into my memories of Mom. If she were here right now, we would sneak off into the back bedroom and.....

"Well, I see you made it back alright." Aunt Jane says as she enters the room returning from the funeral home.

"Yeah, I made it back but I don't think I'm going to be alright." I told her matter of factly. I didn't know how much she saw when I was touching Mom and, if she did, whom would she tell.

"Come here." she said holding out her hands as if she wanted to hug me.

I got up and went to her. I reached out my arms also. We locked into a hug that felt good. Right now I needed a woman's touch. I needed to feel warmth. In her arms I found the comfort that I knew from Mom. I was amazed that Aunt Jane could permeate this same warmth, as she did not have children. She was eight years younger than Mom and got caught up in building a career for herself. I knew that she and Mom talked and visited often which I didn't mind because she was a very attractive woman.

"Don't worry baby. I can be your Mom now." she whispered in my ear.

Unsure of what that meant, I flinched a little but she tightened her grasp on me a little as if to assure me that she would not let me go. I grabbed her a little tighter also while I realized the sensations of her voluptuous body so close to mine. Aunt Jane's breasts were pressing into my chest and her arms were around my shoulders rubbing my back. I moved my hand up her back and felt her bra clasps. I moved my hand down to her waist and felt the curves of her womanly figure. My manhood began to swell in my pants as a result of this closeness. Aunt Jane felt the throbbing in my pants press against her. She reached down and placed a hand at the small of my back. Pulling me even closer, my tool ground into her pelvis.

"Don't worry baby,. I can be your Mom now." she repeated almost silently in my ear.

    "I, um, I don't understand" I stammered.

"She told me all about your relationship. In fact, I encouraged her to enjoy herself given the fact that she had such a fine young man at her disposal. She loved you." she reassured me.

    Instinctively, I re

What is more pathetic? The people who reload again and again when they see "The next story is being prepared! Beat the rush and subscribe!" or whatever that money begging link says and posting trolls, crapfloods and generally being lighthearted or are the mods who wait with frothing mouths and baited breath because THEY FINALLY ACQUIRED MOD POINTS and immediately mod down the trolls?
I have to say the mods.
Who are the trolls truly hurting? Since when has there been an worthwhile, on-topic thread that didn't take itself so seriously that anyone who dares question the herd isn't immediately lambasted and shunned like so many Amish.
So you saw Goatse again. Who hasn't? Such images should be old hat to you four and five digit slashdotters yet they get modded into oblivion by you self-styled police living your lives of quiet desperation, living with your parents at the age of forty, beating off to camgirls and still never getting any tail.
    Shame on you, slashdot.

Imagine an internet connection so fast it will let you download a whole movie in just five seconds, or access TV-quality video servers in real time. That is the promise from a team at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, who have developed a system called Fast TCP.

The first practical test of Fast TCP took place in November at a supercomputing conference. Researchers from Caltech, Stanford and CERN near Geneva in Switzerland, sent data 10,000 kilometres from Sunnyvale, California, to CERN at an average rate of 925 megabits per second. Ordinary TCP managed just 266 megabits per second on the same routes.

So expect to see it posted when an annoying NYT article is available.
