17" Monitor Case Modding -- The "iMike"
greyrax writes "So what does a Canadian cabinet maker who's a closet techie do during those long winter months? You modify a 17" monitor case to house your computer (think iMac).
The blow-by-blow descriptions and pictures outline this three-month project. The only question that I'm left with is 'What is that antenna for?'"
this has to be the ugliest and most retarded thing i've seen in a long time. Even if you get beyond the idea that he hollowed out a crt case and used an lcd monitor inside it, whats the deal with the two cd-roms and the floppy and (i assume) zip drive? Would have been a lot cooler looking if the whole case wasnt hacked to bits to include a lot of extra idiotic gagetry. This is so far away from an iMac only a blind man would compare them.
+1 ugly
So, he built a regular computer into a 17" CRT monitor. Now, let's build a 17" CRT monitor into a regular computer!
Or better yet, let's build the computer into my scanner. Or my speakers! Ooo oo my printer!!
Erm, I go get some sleep.

Is the goal of case modding to make something better than before? Not only does it not look like an iMac, but it's ugly as hell.
That red internal paint and green exterior remind me of that show from Canada, "The Red Green Show".
I'm sorry. I know he worked really hard on it but jonathan ive he ain't.
only its still freezing. frost warning just the other day, and i dont even need a special cup to keep my beer cold outside.
Once again I submit that case mods should have their own category.
what on earth is interesting about this post???
This is sorta off topic but oh well..
.. I put a power switch to shut off the LEDs.. now I'm not a hardware junkie.. the switch is actually a 115/230 voltage selector from a dead PSU.. 115V=ON, 230V=OFF =P
I recently hooked up a CueCat (for a software project) I had in my closet for years (or whenever it came out).. I decided to modify it
Anyway, I cut the red wire that goes from the board to the LED (there is also a black wire), I then connected that wire to the switch, and then connected the other connector on the switch to the LED.. it works, the LED turns on/off.. But is that OK to do? Should I have connected the switch to the main red power wire, therefore cutting ALL power to the cuecat when the switch is off?
I dont really care if my cuecat uses power, I just wanted to shut off the LED so it doesnt distract me.. I'm not going to damage my keyboard/pc by having the switch on the LED red wire am I?
Thanks.
And manafacturers, how about a sticker warning "DEATH MAY BE IMMENENT IF OPENED,"
;-)
They should put that label on cans of Campbell's chunky beef soup. That stuff is horrible.
I'd rather be a conservative nutjob than a liberal with no nuts and no job.
Imagine a beowulf cluster of these!!

If he just wanted to do us the favour of reducing download times, he could have used thumbnails.

I mod down every jackass who puts his moderation policy in his sig. Oh, wait a sec....
"Off Topic" is a total bullshit moderation. NOTHING should be considered off topic.
I wish to hell the powers that be would replace it. An "Unfunny" or "Not Funny" would be better. The not funny mod type would work great for instances when a poster was trying to be funny, but was stupid instead.
If you ever meta moderate you will note than "Funny" mods can be rated funny to unfunny.
Much more useful than "Off Topic".
