What's up with "First Post" comments?

"First Post" comments are one of those odd little memetic hiccups that come out of nowhere and run amok. Basically, people with altogether far too much spare time sit and reload Slashdot, hoping that they will get the "First Post" in a discussion. This is one of those things that the moderation system was designed to clean up, and for the most part, it works. "First Post" comments usually get moderated down as off-topic almost instantly.

I'm on dialup, so while I was updating my FreeBSD ports so I could install the latest dickware product from the ximian monkeys I noticed there were no comments. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the "Slashduck" system doesn't work! Luckily, my FreeBSD router decided that my HTTP packets were more important than the silly cvsup packets, and that is how you get FP dudes. INSTALL A REAL OS THAT DOESN'T USE SCO CODE! That is all, thank you.

Personally, I've never liked GNOME. KDE 3 is available for Woody, although I haven't tried it. I've only used Debian on headless servers you see, and only considered switching from Mandrake on the desktop.
