AMD's Next Generation Processor Technology

Esekla writes "AMD has released info about their upcoming processor technology. The press release claims that they're producing circuits that run 30% faster than any other published benchmarks using "Fully Depleted" Silicon-on-Insulator and AMD's metal gating technology and actually has a good bit of technical detail for a press release."

Why is it that every time an increase in computing performance is reported, Slashdot is full of people whining why they don't need it.

    'Cuz they're just whiny beeyatches!

Why is it that everytime someone bitches about hardware speed being unnecessary someone else replies saying my Mom or some other female will enjoy doing video editing and other crap on it. I know a lot of Mom's - none of them do video editing. >8)

Maybe AMD could start by releasing some quality products...

Do you actually think IBM/Apple will usurp the Wintel market space? As much as I'm sure they'd like to, I doubt they intend to try to compete in the PC arena. AMD and Via are the only ones who might have a chance in the PC market, but AMD releases crap and Via seems to be targetting the low end only. Although I'm a fan of Cyrix in their integrated solutions, their chipsets don't offer the compatibility that Intel's do.

I would rather have stability over speed ANY day. Give me a i850 motherboard with a Pentium 4 any day over an Athlon pizza-oven on some mickey mouse chipset (ALi, SiS, Via, whatever). Unless 1.2 fps in Quake really makes that much of a difference...

Ok, now mod this as Troll have have about half a dozen people reply with, "Well, I must be hellucinating then because my AMD box has been running flawlessly for over 3 years now!" comments. That's great. Consider yourself lucky to be a part of that small percentage.

processor speed improvements is very exiting. What I wanna see is a yearly increase of 30% on I/O speed
Well, if you consider it to be very exiting, then you're probably already satisfied with the increase in "O" speeds. But if they can also increase the "I" speeds, then we could be in for some very entering times.
