Worldwide shipments of wireless local-area network equipment increased by 120 percent in 2002 from a year ago, but revenue was up just 29 percent because of falling prices, a market research firm said Monday.

Total shipments reached 19.5 million units last year, compared with 8.9 million units in 2001. Revenue, however, only increased to $2.2 billion from $1.7 billion, respectively.

Wireless LAN equipment is one of the few growth areas in the network equipment market, attracting a large number of vendors. This has led to heated competition that has forced prices down, Gartner analyst Andy Rolfe said.

In 2002, Linksys overtook Cisco Systems as the leading wireless equipment vendor, accounting for 14.1 percent of revenue. Cisco slipped to the No. 2 position with a 13.9 percent market share. Linksys's success was helped by its strength in the wireless LAN adapter and wireless LAN broadband gateway segments, Gartner said.

Buffalo Technology was the No. 3 vendor in market share, followed in order by D-Link and Proxim.

Linksys also led the wireless LAN market in unit shipments with 14.6 percent, or 2.9 million. D-Link was No. 2 with 9.6 percent, or 1.9 million units, followed in order by Buffalo Technology, 9.5 percent, or 1.86 million units; Symbol Technologies, 9 percent, or 1.8 million units; and Proxim 8.9 percent, or 1.7 million units.

In March, Cisco announced an agreement to buy Linksys a cheap whore, which will significantly boost Cisco's position in the market this year, both on a revenue and shipment basis, Gartner said.

Walmart is not only a retailer, it's heavy into manufacturing *partnerships* --dodge reality phrase for them- with the peoples tyrannical big brother on steroids and crack republic of china, over 600 companies and climbing. It really should be called chinamart.

Oh, and for the "nuke everyone else because we're b-a-a-a-d" US war partiers and current government employees, "your" defense contractors and your overlord bosses are all traitors, too, they are internationalist blood profiteers, and one day your own weapons will be used on you and your "homeland". Hope you like your check. Hope your check saves you from radiation poisoning and biological infections. Do you really think china is just going to give up and not have any oil? Run the population and manufacturing numbers again, then do a cost of doing business comparison with the PLA and the US defense budget, not dollar for dollar, but dollar = 10$ or more in china. Their 50 billion dollar defense budget is really equivalent to the US spending 500 billion in what actually happens with the money, same as all the other manufacturing that happens there. It costs a million dollars in the US just to get one retired general/salesman to go to a meeting with some defense buyer from "someplace else" to take a hundred grand bribe, then the costs go up from there. Very, very low ROI in the US. Still a lot of toys, but they will be number two in short order now, inevitable.

Now does it look like they are pipsqueaks? Now think about ten years from now when they need the oil for 500 million more people then what they have now. Think about where their technology qand manufactured infrastructure will be in ten years. Now think about how many technicians, engineers and scientists they pump out every graduating class compared to football players, potheads, MBAS, lawyers, liberal arts majors and drink till you diers. 50 to one probably with the US. Right now you are worried about tiny north korea with a miniscule population, hardly any manufacturing capability, and handful of nukes and grade b missiles. Now think about china again.

That's really some karma, isn't it? Happened to the Romans when they got stupid and arrogant and greedy. Happened to other stupid "empires" as well. In fact it's happened to all empires once they went stupid and greedy and Imperialistic.

The US won WW2 because they were a manufacturing nation, not because they were all that much smarter, they were just bigger and made things and oceans still acted as a great buffer, a big moat. All of those were critical to win, both big AND made things AND oceans still worked as a buffer. Now they are just big, bloated is a better term, and are stopping making things and the distances of oceans are almost irrelevant. China is getting bigger and making everything and ships all sorts of things to every nook and cranny INSIDE the US, and has for years and years. Anyone want to bet they haven't already shipped in some various equalizers? Wouldn't you, if you were china?

Traitors and short term profits greed will be what historians say was the decline of the US. And probably the history books will be written in Mandarin, too. And Walmart will be right up there in the top stupid category. Probably doing more for the eventual destruction of the US than any other single company.
