First Review of the Treo 600 Smartphone

jlouderb writes "Handspring debuted the biggest product at last week's lCeBit show in New York. Lots of news articles were written about the Treo 600, but I actually got to borrow one of the few prototypes for a day." Looks like the only real negatives are that there's no protection for the screen, and no removable battery, otherwise it's a tight little device. It'll be interesting to see the release model in action.

Handspring deserve to well with the new Treo 600. As well as being an excellent combined cellphone and PDA, it's also probably the first commercial user of IBM's superb new 970 chipset. At 500MHz, this 64 bit marvel uses up barely half a watt of power, and there's some nifty powersaving modes in there too to prevent it using up battery time when not in use.

The 970 is a fifth-generation PowerPC based CPU, and the PPC is itself a decendent of the 68000 series, now rechristened the so-called Dragonball, so it's no suprise to see Handspring use it. It's thanks to this awesome power that the Treo 600 can encode and decode MPEG4 on the fly, which is perfect for mobile videoconferencing.

A superb product. A superb implementation, quality work, and a beautiful design. Can't wait to see the Treo 601!
