NYT Reports Porn Spam Hijacking Network
twitter writes "This NYT story describes how thousands of PCs have been used as porn spambots and reverse proxy servers, and mentions that they could be used for kiddie porn. Finally, though Microsoft is not mentioned, people might start to understand what a monoculture of poor quality software enables."
An admirable attempt to bring page widening and lengthening back to Slashdot, but it's a far cry from the past accomplishments of the legendary Klerck.
If it wasn't a Windows monoculture it would be a monoculture of Unix which, if purveyed by the originators, would cost an arm and a leg. And Linux would have been squashed long ago (or held hostage in the courts) if Unix makers had had the forethought and foresite to successfully make it to PC's. And all the security breaches would be UNIX oriented.
What's really sad are the abuses being performed, regardless of the OS. Isn't it depressing that we need the highest security in our OS'es at all? That even something as potentially freeing and egalitarian as the internet gets perverted to the hunt for the almighty buck?
Finally, here's a scary thought. What if the idea gets really taken seriously by someone in government that the best way to fight hacking is to crack down on the free OS'es that nurture hacker skills?
So rather than snarking about poor Windows security why doesn't the free OS community do something to curb those that would abuse any OS security? Why not help in the tracking down or thwarting perpetrators?
Call this off topic but the gleeful pointing out of security breaches seems like mispent time. Let's hear about how someone helped overcome a breach.
