EU Rolls out Anti Spam Strategy

An anonymous reader was one of several who noted an article about the latest developments in the EUs War on Spam. The article is pretty realistic in pointing out that EU Legislation won't be very effective unless Asia and the US do something as well.

I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you trolling losers? I've been sitting here at my cubicle reading slashdot for about 20 minutes now and again some pathetic AC has posted another variation on the parent troll. A pathetic AC. At home, where I also read slashdot, which by all standards should be the same as slashdot at work, the same troll will still appear in about 20 minutes. If that.

In addition, during reading the parent troll, I will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt.

I won't bore you with the laundry list of other insults that I've thought of while reading variations on the parent troll, but it is suffice to say there have been many. I don't get how someone can claim to get satisfaction from posting the same troll over and over again, whether it be changed to read Mac Classic, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, OGG, Windows, IE, PPC, or anything else.

Troll addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to post variations of the same boring old troll.

White House Set to Project Record Deficits
    Tue July 15, 2003 07:26 AM ET
    By Adam Entous

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House was expected on Tuesday to forecast a record budget deficit approaching a half trillion dollars this fiscal year -- $150 billion worse than its earlier projections -- with little hope of a turnaround any time soon.

Democrats said the deficit of roughly $450 billion was close to crisis proportions and some fiscal conservatives urged President Bush to do more to reverse the trend before it gets any worse.

"It's bleak," said one Republican congressional source.

The White House countered that the bigger deficits were "manageable" and reflected economic and national security priorities following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Administration officials said the budget projections would include, for the first time, initial costs of the war in Iraq.

Military operations there and in Afghanistan have cost roughly $4.8 billion a month -- $58 billion on an annual basis -- which is well over initial estimates.

"We are drifting into bigger and bigger deficits and what I find alarming is that neither party is willing to give up its political priorities to do anything about it," said Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a balanced budget advocacy group

Rising deficits have yet to become a major political issue outside Washington, but some analysts believe that will change if they keep climbing ahead of the 2004 presidential election.

White House officials declined to comment on the new Office of Management and Budget (OMB) projections, which congressional aides expected to show a fiscal 2003 deficit of $450 billion or more, with a similar gap in 2004.

Just six months ago, the White House said it was expecting a deficit of $304 billion for the current fiscal year and $307 billion next year. That was before the war in Iraq.

"The numbers we're talking about are not detrimental to the economy. ... It's most important to protect America and get the country back to work and then fix this manageable deficit," said OMB spokesman Trent Duffy.

But the projected deficits would eclipse the previous record of $290 billion in 1992 when Bush's father was president. The U.S. government then enjoyed four straight years of budget surpluses between 1998 and 2001.

The White House sought to play down the size of the projected deficit, saying it was not a record when measured as a percentage of U.S. gross domestic product, and was helping fund national defense.

"What is (the) cost of a country that is attacked? What is the price that the American people would have to pay if something like that were to ever happen again?" said White House spokesman Ari Fleischer.

Democrats said federal budget deficits were approaching crisis levels not seen since the Reagan administration, and blamed Bush's sweeping tax cuts for the sharp reversal in the U.S. fiscal position.

As recently as 2001, White House and congressional analysts had predicted 10-year budget surpluses of up to $5.6 trillion. Many analysts now expect massive deficits through 2013.

"As bad as the budget is going to appear, it's actually worse," said the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Budget Committee, Rep. John Spratt of South Carolina.

Democrats and some analysts say that when Social Security is set aside, the actual deficit could approach $600 billion, or 5.5 percent of GDP, one of the highest since World War II.

      To quote Neal Boortz:

You are going to hear today that we've set a record for federal budget deficits. The figure is around $400 billion dollars. Hey, that's a lot, but it's not a record. It's not even "almost" a record.

When you are considering a deficit the critical measure is not the dollar amount. The severity of a deficit is measured by percentages; more particularly, the percentage of your total economy.

In the past the United States has suffered under deficits equal to 6% of the GDP, and more. This deficit will be just under 4% of the GDP. This is NOT a record, no matter how hard the press tries to make it so.

Look at it this way. Let's say that your family spends $5,000 more than it makes in 2003. Is that bad? If you only make $25,000 year, it's bad. To eliminate your deficit you have to cut your spending by 20%. But what if your total income is $500,000? Then you only have to cut your spending by 1%. No big deal.

Critics will try to put this deficit in the worst possible light. They'll cite only the dollar amount, not the percentage of the GDP.

If our education system in this country were worth a damn people would see through this "record deficit" nonsense. But, then, if frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their butts every time they jumped.

Now .. having said this, let's repeat some points from yesterday. Federal spending is increasing under George Bush at a rate that makes Clinton look like a miser. Bush is a big part of this spending with his education bill and other big-government spending measures. He has yet to veto one single spending bill, and is now promoting one of the most expensive spending programs we've seen in decades; the free drugs for old folks program.
