UK workers at risk as Ford axes 2000 jobs

Ford Motor Company is poised to axe up to 2000 white-collar jobs worldwide as the Detroit-based car giant seeks to cut salaried employee costs by 10%.
Ford employs more than 18,000 people across 16 locations in the UK and the cost-cutting exercise is bound to have an impact on the firm's British workforce.
Ford would not specify how many jobs would be affected by the plan, which was outlined on Friday as the firm opened talks with unions for a new contract and permission to close two US plants and cut thousands of blue-collar jobs.
But a Ford source suggested the majority of the salaried job cuts would come from its 45,000 white-collar workers in North America.
In an e-mail to staff Nick Scheele, Ford's chief operating officer said the car-maker would also look at other ways of reducing costs, including clamping down on business travel, consulting and other discretionary expenses.
The move followed a warning from Ford on Wednesday that it saw no economic improvement in the US and Europe for the remainder of the year.
The Ford Focus was recently ousted from the UK's best-selling slot by the Renault Megane.
Ford reported a 27% drop in second-quarter earnings last week, along with break-even results in its automotive business, due to slow sales and higher incentives in the US and Europe.
Professor Garel Rhys, Cardiff University's auto expert, recently said Ford - which offloaded activities such as Kwik-Fit in recent years - is now in "mortal danger".
"In the 1990s, Ford and Chrysler benefited from booming demand for new sports utility vehicles and pick-up trucks, but they took their eye off cars. As a result, the Europeans and Japanese now account for more than half of all cars sold in the US - against 15% two decades ago.
"And this is happening as companies such as Toyota are challenging US companies in areas where they have been strong," he added.
