SCO Targets US Government, TiVo
An anonymous reader writes "According to SCO, if you have a TiVo set-top box, or those models of Sharp Zaurus which use Linux, someone now owes them $32, since the company wants money 'for each embedded system using Linux.' SCO also says government agencies must pay up to $699 for each copy of Linux that they use."

The reason they don't report the offending code is because this isn't the same SCO that claims "ownership" over the code. The code SCO claims was bought by a company called Caldera which was bought by another company which renamed Caldera "SCO". That company is not a litigation company. What they do for a living is SUE people. If you publicly run Linux and say "I don't pay SCO so you shouldn't either", they will probably not sue you, if you have enough money to defend yourself. Probably some universities will do this soon: get sued and get the case dismissed by showing it's IBM's code that was added to the kernel, not SCO's. That IBM code was owned by IBM and only further derivatives of the IBM code *in UNIX* are "controlled" by SCO. IBM never agreed not to disclose identical code that came from them. They agreed not to disclose SCO secrets. In short, the SCO case is weak, weak weak, and they know it. SO they will avoid going to court however they can, and avoid for as long as they can, preferably only after they're out of business. A judge would rule against them. Try searching the Linux source code for copyright strings like IBM and whoever used to own UNIX...
