Quake IV Tidbits Revealed

Thanks to GameSpy for their interview with Rick Johnson of Raven Software, the lead programmer on Quake IV. Although the game isn't being shown at QuakeCon this year (Todd Hollenshead of id says "Quake 4 and QuakeCon 2K4 sound pretty nice together"), more details are revealed: "Quake IV is primarily a single-player focused game which will be continued on a near storyline from Quake II. That's not to say that we won't have multiplayer, but our primary focus is currently the single-player experience." It's also confirmed that the game is using the Doom 3 engine, and elsewhere at the show, "Tim Willits of id mentioned that work is being done on vehicles for the upcoming Quake IV."

That's saying a lot considering not a single screenshot of Quake 4 has been released, the game is very early in development, only a tiny bit about the story is known, and it has yet to be shown publically at all except for a single piece of concept art and the bits of leaked artwork.

not exactly, quake 4 will have even higher system requirements (256mb min, 1Ghz min, etc) and will feature things like vehicles, unlike doom 3's mainly indoor gameplay.

The story-line may be, but as I see it and probably the most of the Quake community sees it, the whole point of Quake 4 is to get an engine update for the quake online multiplayer gaming. Just as Q2, which wasn't that magnificient as a single player (atleast in comparison to Quake 1), but kicked butt online. From Quake 3 they dropped the single player all together because the only thing community wanted was the online game.

Since Quake 1, ID hasn't put effort in single player experience, but their network engines and multiplayer playability exceeds the other fps online games. Current community that developes the multiplayer mods also plays a huge role here. And no worries there, because considering what kind games have been developed on top of their engines (Half Life, Jedi Knights, Wolfenstein, etc...) I don't think the single player front has much to complain about either...

But I must say that I am bit suspicious about how the Doom 3 itself will work out as a single player experience. Enemy AI is one of the things I'm most worried about, because that has always been an Achillee's heel in ID games.

Hmm, can't say I can agree with Q2 kicking butt online. I actually thought it was pretty bad in comparison with Q1, where id fixed its problems in Q3. Q2 to me was always THE Quake for single player, and if Q4 is going to be made for this as well, it's a bit surprising since I expected Q4 to be a refined version of Q3, with Doom III being for single player already.

doom and quake 1/2's stories were more in the readmes and the manual, as at that time it was too hard to actually have the story unfold in game. I really loved the story on doom1, specificly episode2->3 as it really shows what the game is all about. You die, go to hell, then have to fight your way out.

Quite true. And a thing I think ID shouldn't have underestimated. I mean, I've been a huge fan of ID's games and have played them online for 7 years now, our clan still playing actively in BarrysWorld leagues. That said, I must say that Max Payne really showed what a story line can be and what it can do to the game. It being otherwise completely (inspite of the bullet time trick) typical FPS game had a great feel to it and IMHO the story line and it's illustration was in great part responsible for that.

However, they did succeed beautyfully with Quake 1 without any story line. Judging from later releases that was most likely luck (though huge cheers must go to NiN solist mr.Reznor for the best computer game soundtrack to date) and they probably should've hired more people with more artistic perception and imagination. Being a lower level programmer myself atleast I'm fully aware that I shouldn't write anything that a user (outside of admins with shells) can actually see...
